flash

Chapter 7 - TRUTH IN THE LIGHTA tall man in a dark tactical suit stepped into the room, raising a silenced pistol.

"Hand over the flash drive, Sarah," he whispered cold-bloodedly. "And nobody else has to die."

Before he could pull the trigger, Daisy launched herself off the ground with her remaining strength, slamming her heavy body into his chest. The gunman stumbled backward, his gun discharging into the ceiling—POP!

I leaped forward, swinging the heavy metal defibrillator paddle with all my strength, striking the assailant across the side of his head. He crumpled to the floor, unconscious.

Outside the hospital window, flashing red and blue lights illuminated the night sky. Dozens of police cruisers, FBI tactical vans, and news helicopters descended upon the hospital grounds. The viral Facebook stream had mobilized the entire city's law enforcement agencies!

Armed FBI agents swarmed the hallway, taking control of the floor. Within minutes, Arthur Vance and his mercenaries were coweringly led out in handcuffs in front of dozens of news cameras.

Mark was arrested right beside Vance, crying and begging for forgiveness as the police threw him into the back of a squad car. As he passed me in the hallway, he looked at me with desperate, pleading eyes. "Sarah, please tell them I was forced! Tell them I loved you!"

I looked at him with pure indifference. "You traded your daughter's life for money, Mark. You are dead to us."

The FBI cyber division seized the flash drive. The contents were worse than anyone imagined: Vanguard Enterprises had intentionally bypassed toxic waste disposal laws across five major cities, corrupting residential plumbing and causing dozens of unexplained pediatric respiratory illnesses over the past three years.
