Chapter 1 - THE TRAP IN THE CIPHER

The Hidden MessageThe paper felt like ice between my fingertips. My throat went completely dry as the numbers on the Marseille shipping ledger began to rearrange themselves in my mind. It wasn’t a standard accounting error. It was an ancient, inverted grid cipher—one that only two people in the world knew.
Me. And my brother, Leo, who had supposedly been killed by a rival cartel two years ago.
“Clara,” Dante’s voice cut through the heavy silence of the conference room. It wasn’t the voice he used when we were alone on the terrace. It was the cold, lethal tone of the Don of the Bellini syndicate. "Read the entries."
Lorenzo Calabria leaned forward, his smile widening like a slit throat. "Yes, Miss Vale. Please. We are all waiting to hear about our mutual investments in Marseille."
My heart hammered against my ribs. Beneath the mahogany table, Dante’s fingers were still brushing the back of my wrist. His skin was warm, a stark contrast to the absolute freezing terror washing over me. If I read the real numbers, Dante would realize Calabria was stealing from him. If I read the encrypted message aloud, Dante—who was a master of strategy—would realize I wasn’t just an ordinary secretary from Chicago. He would realize my entire identity was a lie.
The message embedded in the numbers read: THE LION IS IN THE CAGE. THE EAGLE WILL FALL TONIGHT.
The Lion was Leo’s code name. The Eagle was Dante.
"The... the Marseille entries show a four percent deficit in the chemical transit," I lied smoothly, forcing my voice to remain steady, professional, and completely devoid of emotion. "It appears there was a customs delay at the port due to clerical errors."
Lorenzo Calabria’s eyes flashed with a hint of surprise, then narrowed. He hadn't expected me to cover for him. Or perhaps, he didn't expect me to decode it so fast.
Dante didn't say a word. But the pressure of his fingers on my wrist tightened just a fraction. A warning. He knew I was lying. He knew his dutiful, quiet secretary was hiding something massive.
The Breaking PointThe moment the meeting concluded and the Calabria family exited the room, the air turned suffocating. The heavy oak doors clicked shut, leaving only Dante and me in the vast, shadowed conference room overlooking the Mediterranean.
Dante stood up. He didn't rush. He moved with the slow, terrifying grace of an apex predator. He walked around the table until he was standing directly behind my chair, echoing the exact position Nico had been in on the terrace just an hour earlier.
But where Nico’s touch had been hesitant, Dante’s presence was absolute dominion.
He leaned down, his breath brushing against my ear. "You are a very good secretary, Clara. But you are a terrible liar."
"I don't know what you mean, Mr. Bellini," I whispered, keeping my eyes fixed on the ledger.
Suddenly, his hand shot forward, slamming flat onto the desk right over the papers, making me gasp. With his other hand, he gripped my chin, forcing my face up to meet his. His dark eyes were burning with an volatile mix of possessive anger and raw suspicion.
"Do not play games with me," Dante snarled softly, his thumb pressing firmly against my jawline. "You froze. Your pulse spiked so hard I could feel it against my own skin. What did you see in those numbers?"
"It was just a mistake—"
"If Nico touches you again, I will break his hands," Dante interrupted, his voice dropping to a dangerously intimate whisper. "And if you lie to me again, Clara, I will find out what you are hiding the hard way. Who are you?"
Before I could answer, the glass windows of the conference room shattered into a million pieces.
The Ambush“Down!” Dante roared.
In a fraction of a second, his possessive anger turned into lethal instinct. He threw his body over mine, slamming me to the marble floor as a hail of gunfire ripped through the room. The elegant resort lounge was instantly transformed into a war zone. Shards of glass rained down on us like winter snow, cutting into my skin.
Dante pulled a sleek, black semi-automatic from his jacket. He was completely unfazed, his body a shield of pure muscle over mine.

"Nico!" Dante shouted into his earpiece, but only static answered.
The Eagle will fall tonight. The cipher had warned me. This wasn't just a random attack; it was a perfectly coordinated assassination attempt. And the man holding me against his chest was the target.
