Chapter 5 - THE DEVIL'S MERCY

The Chaos UnleashedThe quarry dissolved into absolute pandemonium. The loyal Bellini forces opened fire on Calabria's mercenaries, creating a wall of smoke and flashing muzzle fire.
Using the distraction, I turned my back to Dante, my fingers frantically digging into his second vest pocket. My hands were shaking from the cold, but I found the small, razor-sharp ceramic blade. With a swift, desperate motion, I sliced through the zip-ties binding my wrists, then immediately cut Dante free.
The moment his hands were loose, Dante snatched a fallen rifle from a dead mercenary next to us. He stood up, a towering figure of vengeance against the backdrop of explosions.
"Get your brother out of here!" Dante roared, firing a burst into two attackers who were rushing toward us.
I lunged toward Leo, using the blade to cut his ropes. "Leo, can you walk?"
"I... I think so," he groaned, stumbling as he stood. I hoisted his arm over my shoulder, taking his weight. We began to retreat toward the safety of the Bellini vehicles.
But Nico wasn't finished. Seeing his plan crumble, his eyes went wild with psychotic rage. He raised his gun, aiming directly at my back as I tried to guide Leo away.
"Clara, look out!" Leo yelled, trying to push me down.
A shot echoed through the quarry, but it didn't come from Nico.
Dante had stepped directly into the line of fire. The bullet tore into Dante’s shoulder, spinning him around. He stumbled, but he didn't fall. With a roar of pure fury, Dante raised his own weapon and fired a single shot. The bullet hit Nico square between the eyes. The traitor dropped dead into the snow.
The Aftermath of BattleThe battle ended as quickly as it had begun. Calabria's forces were completely decimated, and the remaining survivors were rounded up by Dante’s elite guard.
Dante was kneeling in the snow, clutching his bleeding shoulder, his breathing heavy and ragged. I left Leo with a team of medics and ran to Dante’s side, throwing my arms around his uninjured shoulder.
"You're insane," I sobbed against his neck. "Why did you do that? You could have died!"
Dante wrapped his good arm around me, burying his face in my hair, holding me so tight I could barely breathe. "I told you, Clara. You are mine. Nobody touches what is mine."
We were brought back to Monaco under heavy escort. Leo was taken to a private, highly secured medical facility owned by the Bellini family, while Dante was treated at his penthouse. The threat seemed to be over. Calabria was ruined, Nico was dead, and my brother was safe.
But the real game was only just beginning.
The Final SetupThree days later, Leo was stable enough to speak. I sat by his hospital bed, holding his hand.
"Clara, you need to leave him," Leo whispered, his face serious. "Dante Bellini is a monster. He manipulated everything. He knew who I was, and he knew who you were from the very first day you applied for that job."
I froze. "What are you talking about?"
May you like
"The cipher in the ledger... I didn't write it to warn you about Calabria," Leo said, his voice trembling with fear. "I was forced to write it. Dante orchestrated the entire coup. He used Calabria to flush out Nico, and he used me to keep you compliant. He wanted you to feel indebted to him so you would never leave."
My heart stopped. The world tilted on its axis for the second time. I turned around slowly, and there, standing in the doorway of the hospital room, was Dante. He was wearing a fresh, pristine suit, his arm in a sling, his dark eyes watching me with a chilling, calm possessiveness.
