Chapter 4 - THE MONACO GAMBIT

The Hostage Situation"Clara..." Leo gasped, his voice cracked and weak. His face was unrecognizable from the bruises, but his blue eyes burned with the same protective fire I remembered from childhood.
"Leo!" I yelled, stepping forward, but Dante threw his arm out, stopping me dead in my tracks.
"Don't," Dante ordered, his voice steady as iron. He looked at Nico, his expression completely blank, the terrifying mask of the Mafia Don fully in place. "You chose a very expensive way to commit suicide, Nico. I gave you everything. Power, money, territory."
Nico laughed, a bitter, twisted sound. "You gave me your scraps, Dante! You treat everyone like tools. And then this girl shows up, a nobody secretary, and suddenly you’re looking at her like she’s the crown jewel of the Bellini empire. You got sloppy. Your jealousy made you weak."
Nico drew his weapon and pointed it directly at Leo’s head. "Here's the deal, Boss. You drop your weapon, sign over the Marseille shipping rights to the Calabria family, and maybe I let the girl live. As for her brother... well, he’s already a dead man walking."
My breath hitched. I looked at Dante. He was a man who never surrendered. He was a man who would rather burn an entire city to the ground than give up an inch of his empire. I knew what he was going to do. He was going to shoot Nico, and Leo would die in the crossfire.
"Dante, please," I whispered, tears finally prickling my eyes. "Please don't."
Dante looked down at me. For a split second, the cold mask slipped, revealing a raw, agonizing vulnerability. He reached out, his fingers gently brushing against my cheek, wiping away a stray tear. It was the softest touch he had ever given me.
"Trust me, Clara," he murmured.
Then, he dropped his gun into the snow.
The SurrenderNico gasped in genuine shock. He hadn't expected Dante to actually disarm himself. None of the mercenaries had. Dante Bellini, the ruthless monster of the Mediterranean, had just surrendered his weapon for a woman.
"Kick it over," Nico demanded, his hand shaking slightly with adrenaline.
Dante kicked the gun forward. "Take the shipping rights. Take the money. Let them go."
"You really love her, don't you?" Nico mocked, a sick grin spreading across his face. "The great Don, brought down by a pretty face. Tie him up!"
Two mercenaries rushed forward, slamming Dante onto his knees and binding his hands tightly behind his back with heavy plastic zip-ties. They pushed me down next to him, forcing us into the freezing snow beside Leo.
As Nico began barking orders into his radio to confirm the transfer of power to Lorenzo Calabria, Dante leaned closer to me, our shoulders touching.
"The second pocket on my vest," Dante whispered, his voice so quiet it was almost swallowed by the wind. "There is a ceramic blade. Cut yourself free when I give the signal."
"What signal?" I whispered back.
Dante looked toward the dark forest line. "The sound of thunder."
The ReinforcementsBefore Nico could finish his radio call, a deafening explosion rocked the entire quarry. A fleet of black armored vehicles tore through the tree line, bearing the crest of the Bellini syndicate’s loyal elite guard.

"What the hell?!" Nico screamed, turning toward the incoming chaos.
"You thought I didn't know you were a traitor, Nico?" Dante shouted over the roar of gunfire. "I’ve known for three weeks. The Marseille meeting was a trap—not for me, but for you!"
