Chapter 2 - FIRE AND DRY PAPER

The EscapeThe smell of gunpowder and ozone filled the air. Dante moved with terrifying efficiency, dragging me by the waist as he fired back through the ruined window frames. Two men dressed in tactical gear fell from the terrace, their blood staining the pristine white stones where I had been applying sunscreen just hours before.

"Can you run?" Dante demanded, his dark eyes scanning my face for injuries.

"Yes," I gasped, wiping a streak of dust and blood from my cheek.

"Good. Keep low. If anyone gets in your way, you kill them." He shoved a compact backup pistol into my hands. It was heavy, cold, and entirely familiar. I held it with a practiced grip that a simple secretary should never have possessed.

Dante noticed. A dark, knowing look crossed his face, but there was no time to question me.

We ran through the back corridors of the luxury resort, the sound of alarms echoing through the marble halls. Nico and the rest of the Bellini security detail were nowhere to be found. The betrayal was deep, and it went all the way to the top of Dante's inner circle.

We reached the subterranean garage just as a black SUV sped toward us, its tires screeching against the concrete. The window rolled down, revealing Lorenzo Calabria’s top enforcer.

Dante didn't hesitate. He raised his weapon and fired three precise shots through the windshield. The SUV veered wildly, crashing into a concrete pillar with a deafening crunch.

"In here," Dante ordered, shoving me into a silver sports car—his personal, armored vehicle. He jumped into the driver's seat, revved the engine, and blew past the garage gates just as a second wave of gunmen opened fire.

The Safehouse TensionHours later, we were deep in the isolation of the French Alps, miles away from the glittering trap of Monaco. The safehouse was a secluded, rustic cabin made of dark wood and stone, hidden completely by dense pine trees.

Inside, the silence was deafening. The adrenaline that had kept me alive was finally fading, leaving my body shaking violently. I sat on the edge of a leather sofa, staring at the gun still clutched in my hands.

Dante walked into the room, having shed his ruined suit jacket. He wore only a black button-down shirt, the sleeves rolled up to reveal the intricate, dark tattoos wrapping around his forearms. He carried a first-aid kit.

He knelt in front of me, his massive frame towering over me even while on his knees. Without asking, he took the gun from my hands and set it on the coffee table. Then, he gently took my right foot, resting it on his knee to remove my broken high heel.

"You're bleeding," he said, his voice strangely quiet.

He poured antiseptic onto a cotton pad. When he pressed it against a deep scratch on my ankle, I hissed in pain and tried to pull away.

Dante’s grip tightened, anchoring me to him. "Stay still, Clara."

"I can do it myself," I muttered, my heart racing for an entirely different reason now. The jealousy he had displayed earlier on the terrace, the lethal way he had protected me during the ambush, and the raw intensity of his gaze right now were overwhelming.

"I said, stay still," he repeated, his eyes lifting to meet mine. The proximity was intoxicating. We were fire and dry paper, just like before, but this time there was no phone call to save us. "You held that gun like a professional assassin, Clara. You didn't panic when the glass shattered. And you lied to protect Calabria's cipher."

He stood up, looming over me, his shadow swallowing me whole. "Who are you working for? Are you here to kill me?"

The ConfessionI looked up at him, my vision blurring with a mixture of exhaustion and defiance. "If I wanted to kill you, Dante, I wouldn't have lied to Calabria to save your life. I would have let him blow you to pieces in that room."

Dante leaned down, placing both hands on the sofa on either side of my hips, trapping me between his arms. "Then explain the ledger. Explain why my secretary knows a military-grade encryption."

"Because the man who wrote that encryption is my brother," I shouted, the secret tearing out of my throat before I could stop it. "And he's supposed to be dead!"
