Chapter 3 - The Council's ShadowWithin twenty minutes of Admiral Reed’s declaration, the grand ballroom of the Warren estate transformed from a glittering nexus of high society into an armed compound.

Sleek, matte-black Vanguard transport dropships descended silently from the night sky, their landing gear kicking up manicured turf on the sprawling front lawns. Heavily armored security infantry in reactive combat plating poured through the French doors, securing every exit, neutralizing private corporate guards without firing a single shot, and locking down all digital communication nodes.
Linda was weeping hysterically now, huddled against a marble pillar while two military police officers stood impassive guard over her. Her expensive designer gown was ruined by the damp grass she had stumbled through when she tried to run toward the private heliport, only to find the airspace completely jammed by Vanguard electronic warfare countermeasures.
"You can't do this!" Linda shrieked, pointing a trembling finger at Celeste, who stood near the grand staircase supervising the data extraction teams. "Dad! Tell them to stop her! She's—she's just a bitter, ungrateful bitch! She forged those military documents! She's lying!"
Arthur didn't answer her. He sat slumped in a velvet-upholstered armchair that had been hastily dragged into the center of the room, staring blankly at his hands. The tremor in his fingers had spread to his entire body. He finally understood the fatal miscalculation he had made five years ago.
He hadn't exiled a helpless daughter. He had forged a weapon, sharpened it in the fires of interstellar war, and pointed it directly at his own chest.
"Director Warren," a crisp, digital voice chimed from the tactical display hovering above the coffee table.
Arthur looked up. Projecting from a portable terminal carried by an intelligence officer was the life-sized holographic avatar of Chancellor Vance, the head of the United Defense Council. Vance’s expression was carved from granite.
"Chancellor..." Arthur whispered, his voice devoid of its usual arrogant authority. "There has been a mistake. The supply contracts with the fringe networks... they were corporate maneuvers, standard grey-market hedges. They weren't treason."
"Selling stealth-shielding generators to insurgent fleets that attacked orbital station Kepler-9 isn't a corporate maneuver, Arthur," Vance replied coldly. "It is high treason of the highest order. And under emergency martial protocols, jurisdiction falls entirely under active military command."
Vance’s holographic gaze shifted slightly past Arthur, landing upon Celeste, who walked over to stand beside the terminal.
"Commander Warren," Vance said, his tone softening with formal respect. "The Vanguard Fleet acknowledges your report. The seizure of Warren Industries assets is complete. All primary servers have been mirrored, and encrypted financial ledgers implicating your father and his board of directors have been secured."
"Secure the perimeter and transfer all primary suspects to the orbital detention platform," Celeste ordered, her voice crisp, authoritative, and completely devoid of familial hesitation.
"Understood, Commander."
As the officers moved in to place heavy magnetic restraint cuffs around Arthur’s wrists, he raised his head one last time, looking at the daughter he had tried to erase from history.
"Celeste..." he choked out, a desperate, pathetic plea slipping past his lips. "I am your father. After everything... won't you show mercy?"
Celeste stopped in her tracks. She turned slowly, looking down at the man who had traded her life for corporate profit.
"When I stood in the medical bay five years ago, bleeding out from a plasma rupture while your lawyers delivered my disownment papers to my hospital bed," Celeste said softly, "I asked you for mercy through my tears."
May you like
She adjusted the collar of her uniform, her dark eyes flashing with unyielding resolve.
"You told me that mercy is a luxury for the weak. You taught me well, Arthur. Now, prepare for the trial."
