Chapter 5 - Whispers in the CorridorsWhile Arthur awaited trial in the cold isolation of orbital detention, his younger daughter, Linda, was discovering the brutal reality of social exile.

Within forty-eight hours of the scandal breaking, Linda’s luxury apartment in the capital’s most exclusive district was repossessed by the banks. Her high-society friends—the very people who had fawned over her designer dresses and laughed at her cruel jokes at the gala—now blocked her comms channels, ignored her video calls, and crossed the street to avoid walking past her.

Desperate, humiliated, and running out of credits, Linda managed to secure a public transit shuttle to the military district gates, hoping to catch Celeste as she left the Vanguard Command headquarters.

The sky above the capital was overcast, a heavy gray blanket reflecting the somber mood of the city. Linda huddled in her oversized coat, shivering against the biting wind, clutching her smart-pad as news headlines flashed across every public billboard: WARREN EMPIRE LIQUIDATED; TRIBUNAL SET FOR FORMER CEO.

At 18:00 sharp, a black armored transport slid through the security gates of the Vanguard compound. The doors hissed open, and Celeste stepped out, flanked by two armed security details. She wore her full dress uniform—crisp navy fabric, polished silver buttons, and the gleaming ribbons of a Vanguard Commander decorating her chest. Her dark hair was pulled back into a flawless military braid, and her posture was absolute perfection.

"Celeste!" Linda shrieked, breaking past the low barrier before the security guards could intercept her. "Celeste, wait! Please!"

The guards immediately raised their energy rifles, stepping between Linda and their commanding officer.

"Stand down," Celeste said calmly, raising a gloved hand. Her guards froze instantly, maintaining their tactical positions.

Celeste turned her head, looking down at Linda. The younger sister looked a complete mess—her hair unwashed, her face pale and tear-stained, her designer coat wrinkled and damp from the drizzle. The arrogance that had fueled her public humiliation of Celeste at the gala had completely evaporated, replaced by frantic, desperate survival instinct.

"Look at me," Linda sobbed, stumbling forward a step. "They took everything, Celeste! The apartment, the trust funds, the cars! The banks froze all my accounts. I have nothing left! You're my sister—you have the power now, you can fix this! Tell them to drop the charges against Dad, or at least give us enough to live on!"

Celeste stared at her younger sister for a long, silent moment. She remembered the sound of Linda’s laughter when the sleeve was ripped away. She remembered the malicious glee in Linda’s eyes as she tried to strip away what remained of Celeste’s dignity before the entire elite class of the capital.

"You called me a disgrace," Celeste said quietly, her voice carrying easily over the hum of the idling transport engines. "You stood there in that ballroom and tried to destroy me for sport."

"I was stupid! I was young! I didn't know!" Linda cried, sinking to her knees on the damp pavement, ignoring the cold mud soaking through her trousers. "Please, Celeste! If Dad goes down for life, I'll be homeless! I'll be nothing!"

"You are right about one thing, Linda," Celeste replied, her expression hardening like stone. "You are nothing. But not because of our last name. You are nothing because you spent your entire life believing that cruelty was a substitute for character."

Celeste turned her back on her sister, stepping smoothly toward the heavy glass doors of the headquarters.

"Get her off military property," Celeste commanded without looking back.

As the guards grabbed Linda by the arms and dragged her away, screaming curses into the rain, Celeste walked into the warmth of the command center, her boots clicking rhythmically against the floor—the sound of an unyielding future marching forward.
