Chapter 2 - THE SHADOW IN THE HALLWAYI froze, the smartphone feeling like a block of ice in my trembling hand. I looked up slowly toward the glass window of Ethan's room. Outside in the bustling corridor, medical staff rushed back and forth. But near the telemetry station, standing completely still, was a woman dressed in navy scrubs. Her face was obscured by a surgical mask, but her head was covered in a bright blue printed scrub cap.

She was looking directly at me.

“Mrs. Russell? What’s wrong?” Detective Thomas asked, stepping toward me as he noticed the blood drain from my face.

“Don’t move,” I whispered, my voice barely audible over the hum of the heart monitor. I held out the screen so he could see the text message and the photo.

Detective Thomas’s reaction was instant. He reached for his hip holster and spoke quietly into his shoulder radio. “Code Red, pediatrics unit three. We have an active security threat. Lock down all exits immediately.”

The moment the alarm chimed over the hospital intercom, the woman in the blue scrub cap moved. She didn't panic; she slid around the corner with terrifying speed and vanished down the emergency stairwell.

“Stay with the child!” Detective Thomas barked at the patrol officer before tearing out of the room in pursuit.

I collapsed into the armchair next to Ethan’s crib, wrapping my arms around my shivering body. My mind was spinning out of control. Who was that woman? Why would anyone want to kidnap a wounded baby from an intensive care unit? And what had Daniel gotten himself into?

Ten minutes later, Detective Thomas returned. His uniform was disheveled, and his face was drawn tight with frustration.

“She got away through the basement service tunnels,” he muttered, slamming his notepad onto the bedside table. “She knew the hospital layout better than the staff does. But we pulled the camera footage from the lobby. Mrs. Russell... that wasn't a stranger.”

He pulled up a paused frame on his tablet and zoomed in on the woman’s profile as she had pulled down her mask while sprinting through the rear exit.

My breath hitched.

The sharp cheekbones. The distinctive crescent-shaped mole beneath her left ear.

It was Sarah. Ethan’s mother.

“Sarah?” I whispered, completely horrified. “Why would Sarah dress up like a nurse to steal her own baby back from a hospital?”

“Because Ethan isn't just their baby, Mrs. Russell,” Detective Thomas said grimly. “We just ran the blood work the hospital took from Ethan when he was admitted. They compared his DNA profile against the national database to establish paternity for the abuse investigation.”

He paused, letting the silence stretch between us until it felt suffocating.

“Ethan is not Daniel’s biological child,” the detective revealed softly. “And he isn't Sarah’s, either. DNA proves that child belongs to Senator Victor Vance—a billionaire politician whose newborn son was reported stolen from a private medical facility in Chicago two months ago.”
