Chapter 5 - THE UNHOLY ALLIANCEMy heart stopped. The world seemed to freeze around me.

Senator Vance—the charismatic, family-values politician currently running for governor—was standing on a rusted catwalk beside the woman who had abused and attempted to kidnap a child.
“What is this?” I gasped, clutching the decoy baby tighter against my chest. “Senator Vance? The police told me Ethan was your stolen baby!”
Senator Vance let out a low, bitter laugh that echoed chillingly through the hollow steel building.
“Stolen?” Vance sneered, leaning against the wooden railing. “Is that what the official police report says? My dear woman, Ethan wasn't stolen. He was created.”
I stared at him, bewildered. “Created?”
“Victor needed a healthy male heir to secure his late father’s fifty-million-dollar trust fund,” Sarah explained, her voice echoing with chilling pride. “His wife is barren. So he hired an off-the-books surrogate agency—an agency I managed. But when Ethan was born with a congenital heart defect, Victor rejected him. He wanted him erased. He couldn't afford a sick child tarnishing his perfect family image during an election year.”
The horrifying truth began to unravel before me like a poisonous thread.
“So you gave him to Daniel?” I whispered, looking up at my bruised, weeping son.
“I didn't give him to Daniel,” Sarah spat. “Daniel was my cover! I needed a naive, gullible idiot who would ask no questions when I suddenly brought a baby home and claimed we were adopting him illegally through a private broker! Daniel was just a caretaker. But then the baby became sick, the medical bills mounted, and Daniel started asking questions. He started noticing the bruises from the home treatments I was giving the boy to keep him alive without going to a real hospital!”
“You were hurting him!” I screamed, tears scalding my cheeks. “You broke his ribs!”
“I was trying to clear his lungs!” Sarah snapped, her face twisting into a manic snarl. “He had severe pneumonia! If I took him to a hospital, the doctors would have scanned his retina, discovered his real birth registry, and linked him back to Senator Vance’s secret lab! It would have ruined us all!”
“And today?” I asked, keeping my voice steady while praying the police outside could hear every word through my wire. “Why did Daniel drop him off at my house?”
“Because I couldn't do it anymore, Mom!” Daniel sobbed suddenly from the catwalk, his voice cracking with unbearable guilt. “She told me to let the baby die in the apartment! She said if we let him pass away quietly, we could bury him in the woods and disappear with Vance’s hush money! I couldn't let him die, Mom! I brought him to you because I knew... I knew you would notice! I knew you would save him!”
Tears blurred my eyes. My son hadn't been the monster who abused the child. He had been a coward—a weak, terrified coward who had used his own mother as a shield to save a baby he didn't have the courage to protect himself.
“Enough of this melodrama,” Senator Vance interrupted sharply, glancing at his gold wristwatch. “Margaret, toss the baby up using the hoist basket on your left. Sarah and I have a flight out of the country in two hours. Once the child is in our possession, I will leave the key to your son’s handcuffs on the floor and we will depart.”

“And what happens to Ethan?” I demanded, taking a slow step toward the metal hoist.
Vance’s eyes narrowed into dark, merciless slits. “Ethan ceases to exist.”
