Chapter 7 - THE UNRAVELING REVELATIONThree days later.

The quiet sanctuary of the hospital room felt surreal compared to the violence of the grain silo. Ethan was resting comfortably in his crib, his breathing smooth and steady under the care of specialized pediatric doctors. His rib fractures were healing, and the dark purple bruises on his tiny abdomen had faded to a pale yellow.

The news outlets were in a absolute frenzy outside the hospital gates.

The story had exploded globally: “SENATOR VICTOR VANCE ARRESTED IN ILLEGAL SURROGACY AND ATTEMPTED MURDER RING.” Sarah was currently in intensive care under 24-hour armed guard at the state prison ward, facing dozens of federal charges, including human trafficking, child abuse, and attempted murder.

Daniel was in the room next door, under police custody. Because he had intervened to save my life and had provided full testimony detailing Vance’s operation, the prosecutor had offered him a plea deal for failure to report a crime, which would likely carry a light sentence.

I sat by Ethan’s crib, gently stroking his soft brown hair.

The door opened quietly, and Detective Thomas walked in. He looked exhausted, the dark circles under his eyes deeper than before, but his expression carried a strange, heavy solemnity.

“How is he doing?” Thomas asked softly, looking down at the sleeping baby.

“The doctors say he’s a fighter,” I replied, forcing a tiny smile. “He’s going to make a full recovery.”

“That’s good,” Thomas said. But he didn't smile back. He pulled a thick envelope from his coat pocket.

“What is that?” I asked, my stomach knotting up again. “More court documents?”

“No,” Thomas said quietly. “After we processed the evidence in Vance’s private lab, our forensic team found medical files that hadn't been uploaded to the state registry. Files regarding the genetic donors used for the surrogacy.”

I frowned. “I thought you said Senator Vance was the father and an anonymous surrogate was the mother?”

“That’s what Vance believed,” Thomas said, opening the envelope. “That’s what he paid for. But Sarah wasn't just running the agency, Margaret. She was playing everyone. She manipulated the fertility clinic’s lab records.”

He handed me a sheet of paper containing a certified DNA match report.

I looked down at the names at the top of the page.

Donor Male: Daniel Russell. Donor Female: Sarah Russell.

My heart stopped beating. My hands began to shake uncontrollably.

“What... what is this?” I gasped, looking from the paper to the detective’s somber eyes. “You said... you said Ethan wasn't Daniel’s child!”

“The initial DNA test was performed using a rushed database search that matched Ethan to Vance’s private paternity registration—a registration that Sarah had falsified months ago to blackmail the Senator for millions,” Thomas explained carefully. “When our federal lab ran the full genomic sequencing yesterday, the truth came out.”

I stared at the sleeping baby, my mind reeling in absolute shock.

Ethan wasn't a stolen child. He wasn't Senator Vance’s son.

Ethan was my true, biological grandson.
