Chapter 6 - THE RUPTUREA cold wave of horror washed over me. Vance didn't intend to raise the child. He intended to eliminate the evidence of his illegal surrogate enterprise forever.

“You’re a monster,” I whispered.

“I am a pragmatic man, Mrs. Russell,” Vance replied smoothly. “Now place the child in the basket. Immediately.”

I looked at the decoy wrapped tightly in the blue blanket in my arms. If I put the fake baby in the basket, they would realize the deception the moment they lifted it. Sarah would shoot Daniel instantly.

I had to buy time. The police needed to strike now.

“No,” I said firmly, taking a step back.

Sarah’s eyes flared with rage. She pulled the hammer back on her handgun with a sharp, metallic clack. “Put the baby in the basket, Margaret, or I blow Daniel’s brains across this wall!”

“Shoot him then!” I roared, my voice booming through the silo with an authority I didn't know I possessed.

Both Sarah and Vance froze in utter shock. Daniel gasped, looking down at me with wide, terrified eyes.

“Shoot him, Sarah!” I yelled, taking another bold step forward. “Because if you kill him, you lose your only bargaining chip! You think I care about a son who stood by while a baby was tortured? You think I’m going to hand over a child to a crooked politician and a psychopath? If Daniel dies tonight, it’s on your hands—but you will hang for it!”

Sarah’s hand began to tremble slightly. My bluff was working; I had thrown her meticulously calculated control into absolute chaos.

Suddenly, high above them, the corrugated metal roof of the silo exploded downward in a shower of sparks and shattered fiberglass!

“POLICE! DON'T MOVE!”

Heavy tactical ropes dropped through the smoke as SWAT officers rappelled down from the roof structure.

“It’s a trap!” Vance shrieked, instantly abandoning Sarah and diving toward the rear metal staircase.

Sarah screeched in fury and aimed her weapon down toward me. But before she could pull the trigger, Daniel—using every ounce of strength left in his battered body—flung himself sideways, smashing his heavy wooden chair directly into Sarah’s knees!

Sarah screamed as her legs gave out. She lost her balance, flipping over the low wooden railing of the catwalk.

She fell twenty feet through the air, crashing onto the concrete floor below with a sickening, deafening thud.

Her gun skittered across the wet dirt, stopping right at my feet.

Above, tactical officers swarmed the catwalk, tackling Senator Vance to the floor before he could reach the fire escape and securing the severely injured Daniel.

I dropped the mannequin to the floor, fell to my knees, and stared at Sarah lying motionless in front of me, her eyes wide with shock, blood pooling around her head.

The silo flooded with flashing red and blue lights as dozens of armed officers kicked through the ground-level doors. Detective Thomas rushed to my side, grabbing my shoulders.

“Mrs. Russell! Are you alright?”

I didn't answer him. I couldn't speak. I just looked up at the ceiling, watching the paramedics cut Daniel free from his chair.

It was over. The nightmare in the dark was finally ending.

Or so I thought.
