Chapter 12 - The Whispers in the CorridorBy noon, the tension in the executive wing had reached a boiling point.

Adrian and I walked side-by-side down the polished marble corridor toward the main boardroom, where the heads of legal, compliance, and asset management were waiting for an emergency briefing. The employees we passed lowered their heads instantly, whispering behind cupped hands. The fallout from Victoria’s arrest and Richard Winthrop’s abrupt firing had left everyone walking on eggshells. They knew the new leadership wasn't just a figurehead; we were dismantling corruption root and branch.

As we reached the heavy oak doors of the boardroom, my phone buzzed sharply in my pocket.

I pulled it out. It was an anonymous text message from an unregistered number:

“You think you’ve cleaned house, Elena? Check the archives on the third sub-level. Some secrets were buried deep for a reason. Look for the file labeled ‘Rose’s Legacy’.”

I stopped dead in my tracks.

Adrian noticed immediately and turned back, his hand coming up to rest lightly on my arm. “What is it? Another threat?”

“Not a threat,” I whispered, staring at the glowing screen. “A breadcrumb.”

Without a word to the waiting executives, I turned around and headed straight for the private elevator banks, pressing the button for the underground sub-levels—areas of the building that weren't even listed on the standard corporate maps.
