Chapter 4 - The Public SpectacleThe commotion had begun to draw an audience.

Travelers rolling their luggage toward the exit gates slowed down, casting curious glances at the angry, well-dressed man, the panicked blonde in the designer silk blouse, and the quiet woman standing firmly behind three baby strollers.

Security guards in high-vis vests began to drift closer, their eyes scanning the escalating confrontation.

“I am not signing anything,” Daniel hissed through clenched teeth, his face twisted in desperate defiance. He took a step toward me, towering over the strollers. “You can’t trap me, Helen. I’m a Vance! My father will sort this out. He’ll fix the trust, he’ll crush your little legal stunt, and you’ll be begging me to take you back within a week!”

I didn't flinch. I didn't back down an inch.

“Your father?” I asked, a thin, humorless smile touching the corners of my lips. “Daniel, look at your phone again. Who do you think authorized the asset freeze in the first place? Do you really think Arthur Hale is going to sacrifice the family empire’s corporate reputation to bail out a son who publicly abandoned three newborn granddaughters for a gold-digging mistress?”

As if on cue, Daniel’s phone rang loudly, vibrating against his palm with an incoming call from a blocked corporate extension.

He stared at the screen as if it were a venomous snake.

“Answer it,” I whispered. “That’s your father calling to congratulate you on your ‘real love’.”

With trembling fingers, Daniel pressed the accept button and raised the phone to his ear. He didn't even get a chance to speak.

“Daniel Arthur Vance,” boomed the deep, unmistakable, thunderous voice of Arthur Hale through the phone’s speakerphone—loud enough for everyone within a ten-foot radius to hear clearly. “Where in God’s name are you?!”

“Dad... listen to me, I can explain—” Daniel stammered, his voice cracking into a pathetic whine.

“Save your breath!” Arthur roared, cutting him off completely. “I am looking at the emergency board reports right now! You have brought absolute shame upon this family name! You have triggered the moral forfeiture clause of the trust, you have illegally distributed a protected generational heirloom to an unverified third party, and you have made our company a laughingstock on every financial blog in the country!”

“Dad, please, it was a mistake, Helen is just trying to manipulate—!”

“Do not speak her name!” Arthur bellowed. “Helen had the dignity to stay home and protect my granddaughters while you were gallivanting across the Atlantic like a decadent fool! Effective immediately, your corporate office is cleared out, your company credit cards are canceled, and your name has been struck from the succession registry. Do not come near my home. Do not come near the office. And God help you if you ever approach my grandchildren.”

Click.

The line went dead.

The heavy, suffocating silence returned to the arrivals hall, magnified a hundredfold.

Daniel stood frozen, the phone still pressed to his ear, his face completely devoid of color. The powerful, arrogant billionaire heir was gone. In his place stood a broken, unemployed, penniless man who had traded everything for a fleeting summer romance.

Chloe stared at him, her eyes wide with a terrifying realization.

“You... you’re broke?” she whispered, her voice trembling as she took a slow step backward, putting distance between them. “You don't have a trust fund? You don't have the house?”

“Chloe, wait, I can explain—” Daniel reached out for her.

“Get away from me, you loser!” she screamed, slapping his hand away. She ripped the emerald-cut ring off her finger—the gold band finally slipping free—and threw it directly at his chest, where it bounced off his linen suit and clattered onto the dirty airport floor.

Without another word, Chloe turned on her high heels and sprinted toward the exit doors, disappearing into the Boston traffic as fast as her legs could carry her.
