Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips"They thought my silence was weakness. They forgot that predators don't roar before they strike."

The footage of Julian Miller being handcuffed in the hallway of St. Jude’s Hospital went viral within three hours.

The media loved it: Grieving Husband Arrested Beside Burned Heiress Wife. But Julian was slippery. Eleanor was even slipperier. Within four hours, Eleanor’s high-powered defense attorney posted a $250,000 bail for Julian, claiming the arrest was a "misunderstanding based on an unverified, edited audio clip provided by an emotionally unstable victim."

Julian walked out of the precinct that evening, adjusting his collar, hiding his rage behind a cool smile.

"My wife is confused," he told the reporters outside the police station. "She was under heavy medication. The truth will come out in court."

They thought they had won the first round. They had no idea I was three steps ahead.

While Julian was sitting in a holding cell, Mr. Vance and I had quietly filed a civil freeze on all assets associated with Miller Development. But we didn't just target Julian's bank accounts. We went after Eleanor's personal estate—the sprawling $6 million mansion in Bel-Air that she claimed was bought with her late husband's life insurance.

It wasn't.

That night, I moved out of the hospital against medical advice. My doctor begged me to stay, warning me about the risk of infection and the physical strain, but I had no time to heal in a bed. I moved into a private, high-security penthouse apartment owned by my father’s trust, guarded 24/7 by a private security firm.

My neck burned with an unbearable, white-hot heat every time I moved my head. When I looked in the mirror, the sight made my stomach turn: bright red, raw skin crawling up the left side of my jawline, a permanent reminder of Eleanor’s cruelty and Julian’s cold smile.

I didn't cry. Tears contained salt, and salt burned the wounds.

Instead, I sat down at my desk with Sarah, my chief forensic accountant.

"Show me the inspectors," I ordered.

Sarah pulled up a series of financial spreadsheets on her laptop. "It’s worse than we thought, Clara. Julian didn't just bribe local inspectors to clear his shaky residential towers. He used faulty steel and cheap concrete in the construction of the Grand Horizon Plaza—his flagship project."

"If that building opens next month..." I murmured.

"It could collapse under heavy load," Sarah finished, her face pale. "Eleanor knew. She paid off the chief inspector, a man named Arthur Pendelton, using offshore accounts linked to a shell company in Panama."

My eyes narrowed. "And where did Eleanor get the cash to set up those Panama accounts?"

Sarah pulled up another document. "She siphoned it from your father's estate six months before he passed away. She forged his signature on a series of secondary mortgage deeds."

I closed my eyes, taking a slow, painful breath. My mother-in-law hadn't just tried to burn me to cover Julian’s debts—she had spent years leeching off my father while he was dying of cancer.

"Call Mr. Vance," I said softly. "It’s time to drop the first bombshell."

The following morning, Julian held a press conference at the headquarters of Miller Development. He was accompanied by Eleanor, who was dressed in elegant pastel silk, looking every bit the victimized, frail mother-in-law.

"We are deeply saddened by Clara’s aggressive legal tactics," Eleanor announced to the press, dabbing her dry eyes with a lace handkerchief. "She is attempting to ruin our family company out of bitterness over her unfortunate accident. We love Clara. We are praying for her physical and mental recovery."

Julian took the podium, looking righteous. "I am officially proceeding with our divorce, but I am asking the court to grant me emergency management of her commercial properties to prevent them from going into default due to her neglect."

Suddenly, the doors at the back of the conference room burst open.

It wasn't the police. It was three senior investigators from the Department of Department of Building and Safety, accompanied by federal agents from the Financial Crimes Unit.

"Julian Miller?" the lead agent announced over the murmurs of the reporters. "We have a federal warrant for the seizure of all blueprints, records, and financial logs regarding Grand Horizon Plaza."

Julian’s face drained of color. "What? On what grounds?!"

The agent held up a document. "On the grounds of structural fraud, bribery, and grand larceny. Courtesy of evidence submitted an hour ago by Mrs. Clara Miller."

The cameras whirred, capturing every second of Julian’s smug smile evaporating into sheer terror. Beside him, Eleanor clutched her chest, her regal facade cracking as she spotted me standing in the doorway, wearing a high-collared silk scarf that covered my bandages, my eyes calm, lethal, and burning brighter than the oil she had poured on my skin.
