Chapter 3 - The Secret Mistress"You traded a queen for a pawn, Julian. Now watch how easily a pawn gets swept off the board."

The federal raid on Miller Development created a seismic shockwave through the city’s elite financial circles. Investors who had promised Julian millions pulled out overnight. Bank accounts were frozen. The stock price of his parent company plummeted to near zero.

Julian was drowning, and he knew it.

That evening, my phone rang from an unlisted number. I answered and placed it on speaker.

"You bitch!" Julian screamed into the receiver, his voice wild and frantic. "You ruined me! You gave them the building records?! Do you have any idea how much money I owe to people who don't care about court orders?!"

"Hello, Julian," I said coolly, taking a sip of ice water to soothe my throat. "How does it feel to watch your life burn?"

"You think you're smart, don't you?!" he snarled. "You think those recordings will stick? My lawyers will destroy your credibility in court! They'll show you're a bitter, jealous wife who couldn't handle the fact that I was sleeping with another woman!"

I paused, setting my glass down. "Another woman?"

Julian laughed, a hysterical, cruel sound. "Did you really think I loved you, Clara? You were just a bank account with a boring face! Chloe has been in my bed for two years! She’s pregnant with my son! The son you could never give me!"

He slammed the phone down, thinking he had landed a fatal psychological blow. He thought reminding me of my infidelity and my past struggle with infertility would break my spirit.

He didn't realize he had just given me another weapon.

"Sarah," I turned to my accountant, who was sitting across the table. "Find everything on Chloe Bennet. Every account, every credit card, every asset registered in her name over the last two years."

It took Sarah less than four hours to trace the money.

Julian hadn't just been sleeping with Chloe; he had used $1.8 million of my father's trust money to buy Chloe a luxurious waterfront condo, a European sports car, and a controlling share in an interior design boutique.

Even better, Chloe was oblivious to the financial storm brewing around Julian. She believed Julian was a multi-millionaire who was simply shedding an "overbearing, ugly wife" to start a lavish new life with her.

The next day, I didn't send lawyers to Chloe. I went myself.

I walked into Chloe's boutique in the fashion district. The store was empty except for Chloe, who was admiring a diamond necklace in front of a mirror. When she saw me walk in—dressed impeccably, the subtle edge of my bandages visible above my silk collar—her eyes flashed with contempt.

"Clara," Chloe said, wrapping her arms around her chest defensively. "If you came here to make a scene, I'm calling security. Julian told me everything. You're crazy."

"I'm not here to make a scene, Chloe," I said smoothly, walking toward a display case. "I'm here to offer you a choice."

"A choice?" She laughed scoffingly. "I have Julian. I have his child. I have this store. What could you possibly offer me?"

I pulled a thick leather dossier from my handbag and tossed it onto the glass counter.

"That dossier contains the clawback petitions filed by my legal team this morning," I explained, my tone as flat as steel. "Every dollar Julian used to buy this store, your condo, your car, and that necklace around your neck was stolen from my trust. Under federal law, those assets are classified as stolen property."

Chloe’s laugh faltered. She grabbed the folder, flipping through the bank statements, the forged wire transfers, and the legal notices highlighting her name in yellow.

"This... this is fake," she stammered, her face turning pale.

"It’s very real," I replied. "In forty-eight hours, federal marshals will seize this building and freeze your personal accounts. You will be named as a co-conspirator in a grand larceny and money laundering case."

"I didn't know!" she shrieked, tears springing to her eyes. "Julian told me it was his money!"

"I know you didn't know," I said, leaning in slightly, letting her see the sharp, angry line of the burn scar peeking above my collar. "Julian uses people. He used me for my money, and he used you for his ego. But right now, you are holding a sinking anchor."

Chloe was shaking. "What... what do you want?"

"Julian’s private ledger," I said softly. "The red book he keeps locked in the safe behind the painting in his private office. The one where he lists his off-the-books investors."

Chloe swallowed hard. "If I give it to you... will you drop the charges against me?"

"You return the condo and the jewelry to the estate, and I'll leave you out of the criminal indictment," I promised. "You get to walk away with your freedom and your baby. Otherwise, you’ll give birth in a federal prison."

Ten hours later, Chloe delivered the red book to my apartment.

When I opened it, my breath caught in my throat. It wasn't just a list of bad debts or cheap contractors. It contained names of local judges, politicians, and high-ranking law enforcement officials who had received monthly payouts from Eleanor and Julian.

The corruption didn't end with a spilled pan of oil. It was a web that spanned the entire city.

And I was about to set it all on fire.
