Chapter 7 - The Ashes of the Empire"Revenge isn't about destroying your enemies; it's about rebuilding something so grand on their ruins that they become nothing more than dust beneath your feet."

With Julian and Eleanor locked away in federal prison, the cleanup of their empire began. But I wasn't content with just watching them go to jail. I wanted total restitution.

Through civil court judgments, every asset belonging to Miller Development, Eleanor’s estate, and Julian’s hidden accounts was liquidated to pay back the victims of their financial fraud—and to compensate me for my medical care and pain.

I bought Miller Development at a bankruptcy auction for pennies on the dollar.

My first act as the sole owner and CEO was to rename the company: Vance & Miller Heritage Properties, dedicated entirely to ethical, high-quality urban development and housing for victims of domestic abuse.

I demolished Grand Horizon Plaza—Julian’s cheaply built flagship project—and replaced it with a state-of-the-art medical burn center and trauma rehabilitation facility, funded entirely by the proceeds of Eleanor’s sold Bel-Air mansion.

One afternoon, eight months after the trial, I received a letter from the state penitentiary.

It was from Julian.

I opened the envelope at my desk in my new executive office overlooking the city.

Clara,

The conditions here are unbearable. My mother is sick in the infirmary, and no one will help her. The other inmates know what I did to you, and every day is a living nightmare.

I know I don't deserve your forgiveness, but please... send money to my prison canteen account. Help me get better legal representation for an appeal. I am begging you, Clara. You were my wife. Remember the love we once had.

Julian

I read the letter twice. Then, I took a pen and wrote a brief response on my official executive letterhead:

Julian,

You told me that night that you refused to live with an ugly monster.

Now, when you look into the metal mirror in your cell every morning, you finally get to see what a real monster looks like.

Do not write to me again.

Clara Miller CEO, Heritage Properties

I folded the letter, sealed it, and handed it to my assistant to mail.

I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling mirror in my office. I looked at my reflection.

The scar on my neck was still there—a distinct, permanent mark that traced from my ear down to my collarbone. But when I looked at it now, I didn't see pain. I didn't see terror. I didn't see an "ugly monster."

I saw a armor. I saw a survivor who had taken the worst fire her enemies could throw at her and used it to forge a heart of pure steel.
