Chapter 14 - An Unwelcome Visitor at the DinerFriday night at Bellini’s Diner was an absolute triumph. The warm amber lights spilled out onto Fourth Street, illuminating the sidewalk where a small line of patrons waited patiently for a table. Inside, the air was thick with the rich, comforting aromas of garlic, basil, and roasting meats.

At table two, General Sterling was deeply engaged in a lively conversation with a city councilman about municipal harbor zoning laws. Behind the counter, Elena moved with effortless grace, sliding plates of hot lasagna and fresh garlic bread across the pass-through window.
The front bell chimed softly as the heavy oak door pushed open.
A collective hush seemed to ripple through the front booths.
Bianca Vane stood in the doorway.
She looked a shadow of her former self. The immaculate designer clothes and flawless composure were gone, replaced by a simple black trench coat, unbrushed hair, and dark circles under her eyes. The high-society socialite who had once commanded a two-hundred-guest ballroom had been reduced to a frightened, desperate ghost of her former ambition.
She hesitated for a moment, her eyes sweeping over the crowded, joyful interior of the diner. She saw the working-class patrons laughing over plates of food; she saw General Sterling raising his wine glass in a toast; and finally, she saw Elena standing behind the counter, wiping down the stainless-steel prep surface with a clean cloth.
Elena looked up, her calm, steady eyes locking onto Bianca’s trembling frame.
There was no triumph in Elena’s expression. No gloating. No bitterness. Just a quiet, unshakeable dignity.
Slowly, Bianca took two hesitant steps forward, her fingers clutching the lapel of her coat as if seeking protection from the cold reality of the room.
“I...” Bianca’s voice cracked, barely audible over the hum of conversation. “I just wanted to... to talk.”
Before Elena could answer, Matteo stepped out from the back kitchen office, wiping his hands on a clean white apron. He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw who was standing near the entrance.

The entire restaurant grew completely silent. Every eye turned toward the front door.
Matteo walked slowly out from behind the counter, his expression completely unreadable as he came to a halt ten feet away from his ex-fiancée.
