Chapter 4 - The Aftermath in the BallroomThe transition from the sterile quiet of the service wing to the grand arched entryway of the main ballroom was jarring. Through the frosted glass doors, the muffled sounds of a string quartet playing Vivaldi echoed against the high ceilings, accompanied by the low murmur of nearly two hundred of the city’s wealthiest socialites, investors, and political figures.

Matteo and Elena stopped just outside the heavy double doors. Two security guards stationed at the entrance straightened up immediately, their expressions professional yet alert.

“Mr. Bellini,” the lead guard nodded. “Are you ready for the grand entrance? The catering manager said you’d be stepping out in five minutes.”

“There is no entrance,” Matteo said, his voice flat. “Open the doors, please.”

The guard blinked, looking from Matteo’s serious face down to Elena’s flour-dusted apron and bruised cheek. “Sir?”

“Open the doors,” Matteo repeated, his tone leaving no room for argument.

With a heavy mechanical click, the massive oak and glass doors swung outward, revealing the dazzling spectacle of the ballroom. Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead, casting prisms of light across tables laden with silver candelabras, imported orchids, and tiered ice sculptures. Conversations hummed pleasantly across the room. Heads began to turn toward the entrance, expecting to see the golden couple step forward for their first dance.

Instead, they saw Matteo Bellini in his unbuttoned tuxedo, walking side-by-side with an older woman wearing a worn chef’s jacket and an obvious bruise on her cheek.

The string quartet sputtered to a ragged halt, the lead violinist lowering his bow in confusion.

From the front table, Arthur Vane—Bianca’s father and the formidable chairman of Vane Global Capital—stood up, smoothing down his silk tie with an irritated frown. He strode toward the entrance, his face flushing a deep, mottled red.

“Matteo! What in God’s name is the meaning of this?” Arthur boomed, his voice carrying across the silent hall. “The guests have been waiting for forty minutes! Where is Bianca? And why on earth is—” He stopped, his eyes landing on Elena with an expression of pure disgust. “—why is the kitchen help wandering around the reception hall?”

The silence in the room was absolute. Every eye was locked on the trio standing at the threshold.

Matteo stopped ten feet away from his future father-in-law, his hands resting easily in his pockets.

“The reception is canceled, Arthur,” Matteo said loudly, his voice echoing clearly through the vaulted acoustic space.

A collective gasp rippled through the front rows. Several socialites dropped their champagne flutes, the crystal shattering against the marble floor.

“Canceled?!” Arthur shouted, his face purple with rage as he stepped directly into Matteo’s personal space. “Are you out of your mind? I have half the city council in this room! Do you know how many favors I pulled to get the mayor to attend this dinner? You cannot simply cancel a Vane family event because you’re having a domestic squabble!”

“It’s not a squabble,” Matteo said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “Your daughter physically assaulted my mother in the service kitchen less than twenty minutes ago.”

Arthur scoffed, waving a dismissive hand as if swatting away a fly. “Nonsense! Bianca wouldn't soil her hands on kitchen staff. That old woman was probably standing in the way of the service carts and fell over her own two feet. Now get her out of here before the press gets wind of this ridiculous stunt.”

Elena flinched, stepping back slightly, but Matteo’s hand shot out, catching her arm and pulling her firmly back to his side.

“Watch your tone, Arthur,” Matteo whispered, though the microphone clipped to his lapel picked up every syllable, broadcasting it through the hall’s overhead speakers. “Your daughter admitted to knowing exactly who my mother was before she shoved her against the counter and told her she belonged where the grease and dirt are.”

Arthur’s eyes widened slightly as he realized the microphone was live, but recovery came quickly. He forced a strained, patronizing laugh, turning toward the crowd.

“Ladies and gentlemen, pay no attention to this hysterical nonsense. Young Mr. Bellini here is simply feeling the wedding jitters—”

“The engagement is terminated,” Matteo interrupted, his voice ringing out across the room with absolute finality. “Effective immediately. Vane Global Capital’s equity stake in my logistics firm was fully bought out this afternoon. Our business ties are severed. Our personal ties are dead.”

Arthur lunged forward, his face twisted in rage, his finger just inches from Matteo’s chest. “You arrogant little bastard! You think you can use my family name to build your empire and then discard us like trash? I will crush you! I will blackball you from every financial market on this coast! You will never secure another shipping contract as long as you live!”

May you like

Before Matteo could reply, a sharp, clear voice rang out from the center of the ballroom.

“I don’t think Mr. Vane will be blackballing anyone today.”
