Chapter 18 - Shadows of the PastWhile the celebration inside Bellini’s Diner echoed out into the vibrant streets of the Fourth Street district, a sleek black sedan idled quietly three blocks away, half-hidden in the shadows of an industrial alleyway.

Inside the tinted vehicle, Arthur Vane sat in the passenger seat, his fingers nervously drumming against his knee. His tailored suit was slightly rumpled, his hair thinning and graying faster than it should have, and his once-powerful posture was permanently stooped by the crushing weight of public disgrace.

In the driver’s seat sat Marcus Vance, the former federal compliance investigator who had tried—and failed—to bring down Matteo Bellini’s corporate empire.

“Are you satisfied now, Arthur?” Vance muttered, shifting the car into park. “We’ve lost everything. The SEC has seized our remaining assets, the family trust is completely liquidated, and the board has permanently blacklisted your name from every financial exchange in the country.”

Arthur didn't answer immediately. He stared through the windshield at the distant neon sign of the diner, watching the warm amber light spill across the pavement where happy patrons were walking in and out.

“It’s not fair,” Arthur whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of bitter hatred and helpless despair. “That boy... he came from nothing. He had no right to destroy what my family spent three generations building.”

“He didn't destroy us, Arthur,” Vance said quietly, turning the ignition key and letting the engine hum. “We destroyed ourselves the moment we forgot that people who work for a living are the ones who actually keep the world turning.”

Vance put the car in reverse, backing out of the alleyway and merging into the evening traffic, leaving the bright lights of Fourth Street behind them in the rearview mirror forever.
