Chapter 13 - The Second TrapI lowered my weapon slowly, my heart hammering against my ribs as I stepped across the threshold of the subterranean room. The glow of the monitors cast long, dancing shadows across the concrete walls, illuminating complex code strings, satellite tracking maps, and financial flowcharts.

"What is this?" I demanded, holstering my sidearm and stepping up to her desk. "You left a ping in Chicago that led us straight to a dead senator's phantom files, and you're sitting down here drinking coffee like you're waiting for a train?"
Elena didn't blink. She turned back to the primary screen, tapping a key to maximize a high-definition video feed. The image showed a sprawling, heavily fortified estate nestled deep in the wooded hills outside Ann Arbor—surrounded by motion sensors, private security patrols, and high-voltage perimeter fences.
"Richard Sterling isn't dead, and he never was," Elena said calmly, spinning the monitor toward me. "He faked his death five years ago when the federal investigations into the syndicate's drug trials started closing in on his senatorial committee. He’s been running the entire network from this private compound in Michigan while hiding behind shell corporations and political immunity."
Marcus stepped into the room, his eyes scanning the monitors before locking onto Elena. "How do we know this isn't another trap? Vane used similar bait to lure our scouts into an ambush six months ago."
"Vane was a foot soldier, Marcus. A violent, short-sighted thug who liked playing warlord," Elena replied, her voice sharpening with cold disdain. "Sterling is the architect. He’s the one who designed the pharmaceutical trials that killed Genevieve—and he’s the one who authorized the synthetic pathogen meant to eliminate your children so the trial data could never be audited."
My hands curled into tight fists at my sides. The name of the man who had stolen my wife and tried to murder my children echoed in the damp air like a death sentence.
"Where is he?" I asked, my voice dangerously low.
"Ann Arbor. Estate number four on Whispering Pines Road," Elena said, standing up from the desk and pulling a heavy tactical harness over her shoulders. "He's hosting a private summit tonight with the remaining board members of the syndicate to restructure their operations now that Vane is out of the picture."
Before I could answer, a piercing, high-pitched alarm shrieked through the subterranean tunnel outside.
Warning. Perimeter breach detected. Sector four offline.
Marcus instantly whipped his rifle around, facing the doorway. "Boss, we've been compromised! The transit tunnels are flooding with hostile units—heavy tactical gear, automated drone sweepers. They tracked our signal down here!"

Elena didn't look panicked; instead, a grim, knowing smile touched the corners of her mouth.
"They didn't track your signal, Marcus," she said, pulling a specialized EMP-grenade from her tactical pouch. "Sterling knew you were coming the second you accessed this node. He wanted you to walk right into his backyard."
