Chapter 5 - The Antidote"What did you just put into their lines?" I demanded, dropping to my knees beside the bed, my hands hovering protectively over Jonah's pale face.

"The stabilizing agent Genevieve synthesized before they killed her," Elena replied, her hands moving with frantic, practiced expertise as she adjusted the flow rate on the manual drip. "It binds to the synthetic pathogen Vane's people injected into their saline bags and flushes it out of their bone marrow. If we had waited another ten minutes, their organs would have begun shutting down simultaneously."
As if responding to her words, the harsh, erratic beeping of the heart monitors slowly began to shift. The jagged spikes smoothed out into a steady, rhythmic tempo. Jonah’s breathing, which had been shallow and rattling just moments ago, deepened and slowed into natural, peaceful sleep.
Beside him, Blythe stirred, her eyelashes fluttering as she let out a soft sigh.
"Daddy?" she mumbled, her eyes barely opening.
"I'm here, baby. I'm right here," I choked out, tears threatening to spill over for the first time since Genevieve was lowered into the earth. I pressed my forehead gently against her small hand.
Elena stood up quietly, walking toward the shattered window that looked out over the front courtyard. The sounds of heavy gunfire outside were beginning to fade, replaced by the shouts of Mercer loyalists securing the perimeter.
"Vane's tactical unit is retreating," Elena said, her voice distant. "They realized Prescott failed. They know the asset is compromised."
I stood up, wiping my face with the back of my hand, all the cold, ruthless authority of the Mercer name flooding back into my veins—augmented now by a terrifying, unyielding rage.
"Vane thinks he can wage war on my family in my own home?" I whispered, my voice cold enough to freeze blood. "He thinks he can buy my men, poison my wife, and slaughter my children?"
I walked over to the secure wall panel behind the medical suite's desk, punched in my biometric override, and popped open the hidden armory locker. Inside sat a specialized case containing three encrypted satellite phones and the master codes to every offshore ledger, corporate asset, and private militia network the Mercer syndicate controlled across North America and Europe.
"Elena," I said, turning to face her.
She looked back, her expression unreadable.
"You didn't just come here to warn me, and you didn't just come here to cure my kids," I said, locking eyes with her. "You came because you want Vane's head on a spike just as badly as I do."
May you like
Elena walked slowly across the room, stopping inches from me. The fluorescent light caught the silver scar on her face, making it look like a badge of honor.
"Vane thinks he owns the syndicate, Lawson," she said quietly. "Let's show him who built it."
