Chapter 1 - The Voice of the Unseen

ā€œThe Gavel of Blood and Goldā€The touch of the little girl’s dirt-stained fingers against Hector Valverde’s forehead didn’t just shock his flesh; it shattered his soul.

Inside Hector’s mind, a dam burst. For two decades, he had built an impenetrable fortress of apathy. He had locked away the faces of the innocent, the tears of mothers, and the bloody envelopes of cash in the darkest, quietest corners of his conscience. But now, it was as if a brilliant, blinding light had been dropped into his dark abyss.

He couldn’t move. He couldn’t blink. His steel-gray eyes, once feared by the entire city, were wide with a terror he had never known.

ā€œCan I read your mind?ā€ the girl whispered again. Her voice was small, yet it carried the weight of a thunderclap, echoing perfectly through the cathedral-like ceilings of the courtroom.

Suddenly, Hector’s jaw forced itself open. He tried to clamp his teeth shut, but his muscles refused to obey.

ā€œRicardo La Fuente paid me four million dollars,ā€ Hector’s voice boomed through the microphone. It wasn't his usual controlled, authoritative tone. It was raw, frantic, and filled with a desperate panic. ā€œThe offshore account is registered under ā€˜The Iron Titan Holdings’ in Grand Cayman. Account number 004-9921-X.ā€

The courtroom erupted into total chaos.

ā€œYour Honor! Silence!ā€ Ricardo La Fuente screamed, slamming his hands onto the defense table, his gold cufflinks rattling against the wood. His composed, arrogant demeanor vanished in an instant. His face turned a sickly shade of purple. ā€œWhat lie is this? Guards, shoot this child! She is using chemical weapons! It’s an assassination attempt!ā€

But the guards were still frozen like marble statues, their eyes darting in sheer panic, sweat pouring down their temples.

ā€œI destroyed the logs,ā€ Hector continued to shout against his own will, tears of horror streaming down his aged face. ā€œThe missing witness, Elena Rostova... she didn’t run away. Ricardo’s men didn’t just kidnap her. I signed the illegal surveillance warrant that allowed them to track her to her safe house. I watched the video of her capture. I burnt the tape in my own fireplace!ā€

In the front row, Elena Rostova’s mother let out a scream so piercing it felt like shattered glass. She lunged forward, but the air in the courtroom felt heavy, viscous, like stepping through deep water.

The journalists in the room were frozen in a trance of shock, but their fingers worked automatically, typing furiously. The red lights on the television cameras, which should have been disabled by the judge's previous strict orders, were suddenly glowing bright red.

The world was watching. Live.

The little girl smiled softly. It wasn't a malicious smile; it was the serene, terrifying smile of an angel holding a sword of execution. She lowered her hand from Hector’s forehead, and instantly, the paralysis broke.

Hector collapsed back into his massive leather chair, gasping for air, clutching his chest.

ā€œWho… what are you?ā€ Hector gasped, his voice cracking.

The girl turned around slowly, facing the chaotic gallery and the trembling Ricardo La Fuente. She looked at the cameras, then back at the judge.

May you like

ā€œI am the one you forgot, Judge Valverde,ā€ she said softly. ā€œAnd today, everyone is going to remember.ā€

THE HOOK FOR THE NEXT CHAPTER: Just as Hector prepares to call for an immediate mistrial, the heavy mahogany doors of the courtroom violently lock from the outside, and every television screen in the city begins to flash a horrifying countdown.
