Chapter 5 - The War for the Soul

“The EMP Gambit”The glass of the majestic cathedral ceiling rained down like a storm of diamonds. Black-clad operators, heavily armed with experimental weaponry, descended on tactical cables. They didn't look like standard police; they wore advanced exo-suits and visors that glowed an ominous crimson.
“Target locked! Deploy the Zeus Protocol!” the commander shouted through his comm-link.
Before anyone could react, three soldiers fired specialized rifles. Instead of lead bullets, they unleashed high-intensity Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) harpoons. The metallic spikes slammed into the marble floor right around the digital girl, forming a triangular cage of pure, crackling blue energy.
BOOM!
A massive localized electromagnetic shockwave detonated. The digital monitors on the walls instantly went black. The lights in the courtroom died, plunging the room into a dim, eerie twilight lit only by the dust dancing in the gray beams of morning light from the broken roof.
The digital girl staggered. Her form began to flicker violently, turning into a geometric matrix of green and white light. Her face distorted, shifting rapidly between the faces of dozens of different children who had been victims of the city's corrupt elite over the decades.
“It’s working! Maintain the pulse!” the commander roared.
Ricardo La Fuente scrambled to his feet, a look of vicious triumph on his face. “Yes! Kill it! Wipe that digital virus off the face of the earth!”
Hector Valverde smiled, a cold, ruthless sneer returning to his features. He reached down and picked up his heavy wooden gavel from the floor. The power was back in his hands. The status quo was being restored.
But Sarah Vance, the prosecutor, looked at the data drive in her hand. She looked at the note from her director. She looked at the flickering, agonizing form of the little girl, who was carrying the digital souls of hundreds of forgotten children.
“No,” Sarah whispered to herself. “Not again.”
With a surge of adrenaline, Sarah lunged forward, grabbing a heavy metal microphone stand from the prosecutor’s table. With all her strength, she threw it directly into the center of the EMP generator cage, short-circuiting the connection between the harpoons.
A violent explosion of sparks erupted, throwing the tactical soldiers off balance.
The electromagnetic field collapsed.
Instantly, the digital girl snapped back into perfect, solid focus. Her eyes flamed with a dark, terrifying intensity. She raised both her hands, and the gravity inside the courtroom seemed to invert. The tactical soldiers were violently lifted off the floor, suspended in mid-air, their high-tech weapons floating away from their hands like autumn leaves in a breeze.
“Your weapons are built on technology that I control,” the girl’s multi-layered voice boomed, completely filling the space.
She turned her gaze slowly toward Hector Valverde, who was still holding his gavel like a useless club.
The countdown clock on the wall, which had been dark, suddenly flickered back to life, glowing a blood-red color.
