Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Chalice

“The Prosecutor’s Betrayal”With trembling hands, Prosecutor Sarah Vance reached into her leather briefcase. Her fingers tore through the false fabric bottom she hadn't known existed.

Her hand closed around a small, heavy object. When she pulled it out, the entire gallery gasped.

It was a highly encrypted military-grade data drive, stamped with the seal of the Department of National Security. Attached to it was a small sticky note with a handwritten message in elegant, familiar cursive handwriting: “Present the corrupted files. Let Ricardo win. Your daughter's bone marrow transplant has been fully paid for. - The Director.”

Sarah’s breath hitched. The files she had spent months gathering—the very evidence that Judge Valverde had systematically dismantled earlier that morning—had been intentionally altered by her own superiors to ensure they would be ruled inadmissible. She hadn't been fighting a losing battle due to bad luck; she had been a puppet in a meticulously choreographed theater performance.

“No...” Sarah whispered, tears streaming down her face. “No, I didn't know... I swear I didn't see this! They told me the evidence was solid!”

“They used your love for your dying child to make you a partner in their crimes, Sarah,” the digital girl said softly, her tone shifting to one of genuine, algorithmic empathy. “The system ensures that even the good people are forced to carry a piece of the rot. That way, no one can speak out without destroying themselves.”

Ricardo La Fuente let out a maniacal, hysterical laugh from the floor. “Do you see? Do you see now, you stupid girl? The whole world is built on this! It’s an ecosystem! You can’t destroy us without destroying the entire fabric of society! If you release all those files, banks will collapse! Governments will fall! Millions of innocent people will lose their savings, their jobs, their lives!”

Hector Valverde stood up, sensing a tactical opening. He assumed his grand judicial posture once more, attempting to regain control of his narrative.

“The criminal is right,” Hector declared, his voice echoing with calculated authority. “Anarchy is worse than corruption, Nemesis. Corruption can be managed. Order can be maintained. But if you unleash total chaos, the blood of the innocent will be on your hands. Lower the barrier. Let us settle this within the confines of the established legal framework.”

The countdown clock ticked closer to the end: 00:10:02.

The digital girl looked at Hector, then at Ricardo, and finally at the hundreds of terrified faces in the gallery. Outside, the sound of the battering rams had stopped. Instead, the heavy, rhythmic thud of military helicopters could be heard hovering directly above the courthouse roof.

The elite were mobilizing their final defense. The military had arrived to terminate the anomaly.

“You believe your order is the only thing protecting humanity from darkness,” the girl said, her voice rising in intensity, causing the electronic screens to ripple with static electricity. “But you are wrong. You are not the protectors of the light. You are just the monsters who have learned to wear suits.”

Suddenly, the roof of the courtroom shattered.

THE HOOK FOR THE NEXT CHAPTER: Tactical soldiers in unmarked black uniforms rappel down from the shattered skylight, firing high-tech EMP disruptor rounds directly at the little girl—but the result of the weapon discharge leaves everyone in the room utterly paralyzed with horror.
