Chapter 2 - THE ANATOMY OF A THEFT

The diplomatic estate of Dr. Kenneth Vance was cloaked in darkness when Victor’s men bypassed the security gates. Evelyn sat in the back of the SUV, holding a sleeping Sophie against her chest. Victor had refused to leave them behind. “If they want the truth erased, you are the primary target,” he had told her. “Next to me, you are safe. Anywhere else, you are a liability.”
Victor didn't wait for his men to clear the house. He threw open the heavy double doors of the mansion himself, his heavy footsteps echoing through the marble foyer. The house was in disarray. Half-packed suitcases sat on the floor. Papers were scattered across a massive mahogany desk in the study.
In the center of the room stood Dr. Kenneth Vance. He was an elegant man in his late fifties, wearing a tailored tweed jacket, his silver hair perfectly coiffed—but his hands were shaking as he stuffed stacks of Euros and legal documents into a leather briefcase.
He froze when he saw Victor. The color drained from his face instantly.
"Victor... Mr. Hale," Vance stammered, backing away until his spine hit the edge of the desk. "I didn't expect you back from dinner so soon. I... I received an emergency call. I have to return to Switzerland immediately."
"Sit down, Kenneth," Victor said softly. The softness in Victor's voice was far more terrifying than a shout. He walked over, pulled out a velvet armchair, and forced the older doctor into it with a single, heavy hand on his shoulder.
Evelyn stepped into the room, holding Sophie tightly. When Vance’s eyes landed on Evelyn, his breath hitched. He looked as if he were seeing a resurrection.
"You..." Vance whispered, his eyes wide with horror. "You were supposed to be in Eastern Europe. The agency was supposed to ensure you never returned to this side of the continent."
"You lied to me," Evelyn screamed, her voice cracking with two years of suppressed agony. "You told me my baby girl died! You stood over my bed and watched me break into pieces while you sold my daughter like a piece of meat!"
"I had no choice!" Vance pleaded, looking desperately at Victor. "Mr. Hale, you don't understand the pressure I was under! Your wife was dead. The Hale empire needed an heir. You had already poured millions into our research facilities. If I told you that your wife and child had both perished under my care, you would have ruined me! You would have destroyed the hospital!"
Victor leaned down, his face inches from Vance’s. "So you stole a child from a grieving, vulnerable woman, forged a DNA registry, and handed me another woman's bloodline?"
"It was a perfect match!" Vance cried out, sweat pouring down his forehead. "Evelyn was select-screened for her genetic compatibility to your family's profile for the surrogacy program before your wife decided to carry the baby herself! When Eleanor failed, Evelyn was already pregnant with a backup embryo from the alternative track! Sophie is biologically related to you, Victor! She is your late wife’s biological niece through the egg donor program! She shares your family's blood! I just... I speeded up the timeline."
Evelyn felt the room spin. Sophie wasn't just a random baby. She was tied to Victor, and she was tied to Evelyn. It was a twisted labyrinth of medical playing-god.
"Who else knows, Kenneth?" Victor asked, his voice dangerously calm.
Vance swallowed hard, his eyes darting toward the window. "It wasn't just me. I couldn't forge the international transport documents alone. Someone within your own inner circle funded the cover-up, Victor. Someone who wanted to ensure that a child—any child with Hale blood—was placed in your arms so you wouldn't close the offshore trust funds."
Before Victor could squeeze the name out of the doctor, the glass window behind them shattered into a thousand pieces.

A high-caliber sniper round tore through the air. It struck Dr. Kenneth Vance directly in the chest. He gasped, his eyes rolling back as blood bloomed across his tweed jacket. He slumped forward onto the mahogany desk, dead before his head hit the wood.
"Get down!" Victor roared, throwing his body over Evelyn and Sophie as a second shot tore through the armchair.
