Chapter 4 - BLOOD AND WATER

The service tunnels beneath the Hale mansion were cold and smelled of damp salt rock. Evelyn sprinted through the darkness, carrying Sophie tightly against her chest. The two-year-old girl hid her face in Evelyn’s neck, terrified by the distant thudding of gunfire echoing from the floors above.
Marcus led the way, his gun raised, his flashlight cutting through the gloom. "Almost there, ma'am. The boat house is just past the reinforced bulkhead."
But as they reached the massive iron doors of the boat house, the lights turned on violently, blinding them.
Standing on the wooden pier, flanked by four heavily armed mercenaries, was Julian Hale. He was younger than Victor, handsome in a slick, fragile way, wearing an expensive camel-hair coat that looked entirely out of place in the damp cavern.
"Hello, Marcus," Julian said, offering a smug, victorious smile. "I suggest you drop the weapon. You're outnumbered, and frankly, you're on the losing side of history tonight."
Marcus didn't lower his gun. "You won't get away with this, Julian. Victor is still up there."
"Victor is currently occupied with twelve men who have strict orders to ensure he suffers a fatal 'accident' during the home invasion," Julian sneered. He then turned his eyes to Evelyn, his gaze crawling over her with sickening amusement. "And you must be the tragic mother. Evelyn, right? I must thank you. Your genetic material was pristine. Sophie looks just enough like a Hale to fool the trust lawyers, but just enough like you to make this entire drama utterly delicious."
"You're a monster," Evelyn spat, stepping back, shielding Sophie with her arms. "You orchestrated all of this. You killed my baby's chance at a normal life!"
"I secured my inheritance!" Julian shouted, his composure cracking, revealing the desperate, volatile creature underneath. "Victor had everything! The respect, the power, the father's love! I was left with the scraps! But tomorrow morning, the news will report a tragic event. A disgruntled former surrogate broke into the Hale estate, murdered Victor Hale in a fit of maternal madness, killed the child, and then took her own life. The police will find the forged DNA documents in your apartment. The case will be closed. And I will be the sole surviving heir to the Hale dynasty."
Julian nodded to his mercenaries. "Kill the guard. Secure the girl and the woman."
Before the mercenaries could raise their rifles, a deafening explosion rocked the boat house.
The concrete ceiling cracked. A massive black SUV crashed through the upper loading ramp, plunging fifteen feet down and landing violently on the wooden platform, crushing two of Julian's men instantly.
The driver's door tore open. Victor Hale stepped out from the smoke. His white shirt was soaked in blood—none of it his own. His eyes were wide with a feral, unstoppable rage.

"Julian!" Victor roared, his voice echoing like thunder in the cavernous space.
Julian panicked, pulling a small chrome pistol from his coat pocket and aiming it directly at Evelyn. "Stay back, Victor! Or I'll put a bullet through your precious little bastard right now!"
