Chapter 3 - THE WOLF IN THE HIGH TOWER

The Hale estate was a fortress built on a cliffside overlooking the ocean, protected by thermal cameras, laser perimeters, and a private security force that rivaled small militaries. Yet, inside the grand master bedroom, Evelyn felt no peace.

Sophie refused to sleep in her own nursery. She lay curled in a ball on the massive king-sized bed, her tiny hand firmly anchoring itself to the hem of Evelyn’s shirt. Even in her sleep, the little girl whimpered, whispering that one magical word over and over: "Mama... mama."

Victor stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out into the dark, crashing waves below. He had stripped off his suit jacket, his white shirt rolled up at the sleeves, revealing thick, scarred forearms.

"Vance was killed by a professional," Victor said, breaking the heavy silence. "The trajectory shows the shooter was positioned on the water tower half a mile away. They didn't just want Vance dead. They wanted him silent."

Evelyn smoothed down Sophie’s hair. "He said someone in your inner circle paid him. Someone who needed you to have an heir to keep the offshore trust funds open. Victor... who manages those funds?"

Victor didn't turn around. His silhouette against the glass looked monolithic, but for the first time, Evelyn saw a fracture in his armor.

"My stepbrother, Julian," Victor said coldly. "When my father died, he left a stipulation. The Hale corporate empire would be split 50/50 between Julian and myself, but the primary family trust—the trust that holds the controlling shares of the global shipping ports—would only activate if I produced a biological heir within five years of his passing. If I died childless, or failed to produce an heir, the entire trust reverted to Julian."

"So if your wife and baby died, Julian would win everything," Evelyn whispered, horrified.

"Yes," Victor replied, turning around. His dark eyes locked onto Evelyn. "But if Julian knew the child died, he could have just claimed the trust. Why fund Vance to steal your baby and give her to me?"

Evelyn’s mind raced, searching through the fog of her memories from the Swiss clinic. "Because Julian didn't want the trust just yet. If you had no heir, the money would go to him, but you would still be alive to fight him for control of the operations. But if you had a child—a child he knew was fraudulent—he would let you build the empire for two more years, let the trust mature, and then..."

"And then he would expose the fraud," Victor finished, his voice dropping to a gravelly, lethal register. "He would reveal that I stole a child, strip me of my CEO position, throw me in a federal prison for international child trafficking, and inherit a matured, trillions-dollar empire without firing a single shot at me."

Suddenly, the lights in the mansion flickered. The soft hum of the backup generators kicked in, but the security monitors on the wall went completely black.

The bedroom door burst open. Marcus, bleeding from a deep gash on his forehead, stumbled in.

"Sir... it's Julian. He's here. He brought a rogue faction of our own security team. They've compromised the lower gate codes. They aren't here to talk. They're purging the house."

Victor didn't panic. He walked over to a hidden wall panel, pressing his palm against a biometric scanner. The panel slid open to reveal a cache of tactical weaponry. He pulled out a sleek black handgun, checking the magazine with practiced, terrifying efficiency.

"Evelyn," Victor said, his eyes blazing with a dark intensity. "Take Sophie through the service elevator behind the closet. Go down to the boat house. There is a high-speed launch docked there. Marcus will guide you."

"What about you?" Evelyn asked, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Victor smiled, a cold, humorless curve of his lips that showed exactly why the entire city feared him. "I am going to remind my brother why my father left the empire to me."
