Chapter 5 - THE PRICE OF THE HEIR

The standoff froze the entire cavern. The only sound was the lapping of the dark ocean water against the pier and Sophie’s soft, terrified whimpering.

Victor stood perfectly still, his gun leveled at Julian’s head. "Put the gun down, Julian. This is between you and me. Leave the woman and the child out of it."

"They are it!" Julian screamed, sweat dripping down his chin, his hand shaking violently as he aimed the weapon at Evelyn's chest. "She is the evidence! If she breathes, my claim to the trust is dead! If the world finds out Sophie isn't Eleanor's child, the board will strip me of everything anyway! They have to die, Victor! Everyone has to die!"

Evelyn looked at Victor. In that split second, she didn't see the cold, ruthless billionaire the world feared. She saw a father. A man who, despite discovering that the child wasn't his late wife's, had raised Sophie, protected her, and loved her in his own silent, fierce way.

"Victor," Evelyn whispered, her voice cutting through the tension. "Take care of our daughter."

With a sudden, desperate burst of strength, Evelyn didn't run away—she lunged forward, throwing her body directly into Julian’s outstretched arm just as he pulled the trigger.

BANG.

A shot echoed through the cavern. The bullet tore through the shoulder of Evelyn’s uniform, blood spraying onto the wooden planks. But her impact threw Julian’s aim off.

In the exact same microsecond, Victor fired.

Two rounds struck Julian square in the chest. The young billionaire gasped, his eyes widening in shock as the chrome pistol slipped from his fingers. He stumbled backward, losing his footing on the slick wood, and collapsed over the edge of the pier, sinking silently into the black, freezing ocean depths below.

"Evelyn!" Victor dropped his weapon and sprinted across the pier, catching her just as her knees collapsed.

Sophie screamed, pulling at Evelyn’s clothes. "MAMA! MAMA!"

Victor pulled them both into his massive chest, his large hands applying pressure to Evelyn’s bleeding shoulder. For the first time, his voice cracked with raw emotion. "Marcus! Get the medical kit! Call the private clinic now!"

Evelyn gripped Victor's bloody shirt, her vision fading at the edges, but her eyes locked onto his. "Is she... is she safe?"

Victor looked down at Sophie, who was hugging them both, her voice finally unlocked, pouring out two years of unexpressed love. He looked back at Evelyn, his expression softening into a fierce, protective vow.

"She is safe," Victor whispered fiercely. "And so are you. I don't care what the DNA registries say. You are her mother. And no one will ever take her from us again."
