CHAPTER 4 – The Sniper Pulled the Trigger… But the Bullet Hit the Wrong Man

The red laser beam froze on Charles Whitmore's chest.
Time stopped.
Lily clung tightly to his arm, her tiny body trembling.
"Grandpa..."
"I don't want to lose you too."
Charles slowly pushed Lily behind him.
"No matter what happens..."
"You run."
A deafening gunshot shattered the night.
BANG!
The bedroom window exploded into thousands of pieces.
Charles instinctively threw himself toward Lily.
The bullet missed his heart by inches...
...and buried itself into the shoulder of one of the security guards who had rushed into the room.
Chaos erupted.
"SNIPER!"
"Protect Lily!"
Armed agents flooded the mansion while the attacker disappeared into the darkness.
Minutes later...
The FBI arrived.
Lead Agent Rebecca Hayes examined the shattered bullet.
Her expression changed instantly.
"This isn't ordinary ammunition."
Charles frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Rebecca held up the bullet.
Engraved on the side was a tiny symbol.
A black crown.
Charles' face turned white.
"I haven't seen that mark in twenty-five years..."
Rebecca looked at him.
"You know who they are?"
Charles nodded slowly.
"The Black Crown."
"They don't work for money."
"They erase entire bloodlines."
The room fell silent.
Rebecca asked quietly,
"What does Lily have that they're willing to kill for?"
Charles walked to his private vault.
After several security scans, he removed a leather folder that had remained untouched for decades.
Inside was an old photograph.
Alexander Devereaux...
Standing beside Charles.
Between them...
A little wooden box.
Charles whispered,
"Everyone thinks Alexander's fortune is five billion dollars."
"They're wrong."
Rebecca stared at him.
"How much is it really?"
Charles answered without hesitation.
"Nearly fifty billion dollars."
The agents froze.
"But the money cannot be accessed."
"Why?"
Charles opened the wooden box.
Inside...
There was no cash.
No key.
Only an antique gold coin with strange symbols engraved around its edge.
Charles turned to Lily.
"My dear..."
"Has your father ever shown you something like this?"
Lily's eyes widened.
She reached into her backpack.
Without saying a word...
She pulled out an identical coin.
Charles nearly dropped his.
"The second key..."
Rebecca whispered.
"There are two?"
Charles nodded.
"There were always two."
"Together..."
"They unlock the Devereaux Vault."
A vault rumored to contain not only billions in hidden assets...
...but evidence capable of exposing dozens of corrupt politicians, billionaires, and crime syndicates around the world.
Suddenly...
Every phone inside the mansion vibrated at the exact same second.
A live video appeared on every screen.
The mysterious man with the burned hand smiled directly into the camera.
"Good evening, Charles."
"I see Lily still has the second key."
Charles shouted,
"Who are you?"
The man laughed softly.
"You've spent six years protecting the wrong child."
Then...
He slowly removed the black hat from his head.
Charles stumbled backward.
His breathing stopped.
Rebecca caught him before he collapsed.
"No..."
"No... that's impossible."
The man on the screen smiled wider.
"My name..."
"...is Adrian Devereaux."
"Alexander's twin brother."
"And the rightful owner of everything."
Lily shook her head violently.
"No..."
"My daddy said Uncle Adrian died."
Adrian leaned closer to the camera.
"He should have let me die."
"Because now..."
"I'm coming to finish what your father started."
The video suddenly cut to black.
One second later...
The mansion's electricity went out.
Emergency lights flashed red.
A security guard screamed over the radio.
"They're inside!"
Before anyone could react...
A hidden door beneath the library slowly opened by itself.
From the darkness...
Footsteps echoed.
Slow.
Heavy.
Getting closer.
Then a familiar voice whispered...
May you like
"Lily... Daddy is finally home."
