CHAPTER 5 – The Man Everyone Thought Was Dead Walked Out of the Secret Tunnel

The footsteps grew louder.

Every FBI agent raised their weapon.

"Don't move!"

The hidden door beneath the library creaked open.

A tall man slowly emerged from the darkness.

His clothes were torn.

His beard was streaked with gray.

A deep scar ran across the left side of his face.

But when Lily looked into his eyes...

She dropped the gold coin.

Tears filled her face.

"D... Daddy?"

The man smiled weakly.

"I finally found you."

Charles Whitmore couldn't breathe.

"It can't be..."

"Alexander..."

Rebecca Hayes whispered.

"The dead billionaire..."

"...is alive."

No one moved.

Alexander slowly lifted both hands.

"I didn't come here to fight."

"I came to save my daughter."

Before anyone could speak—

BOOM!

A massive explosion shook the mansion.

The ceiling cracked.

Windows shattered.

Smoke poured through the hallways.

"They breached the east wing!" an FBI agent shouted.

"They're inside!"

The mansion erupted into chaos.

Armed men wearing black tactical gear stormed through the front entrance.

Each of them wore the same silver crown emblem.

The Black Crown.

Their leader stepped through the smoke.

It was Adrian Devereaux.

He looked directly at Alexander.

"So..."

"My dear brother finally climbed out of his grave."

Alexander stepped in front of Lily.

"You'll never touch her."

Adrian laughed.

"You still don't understand."

"I never wanted the money."

The room fell silent.

Charles frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Adrian slowly removed a small metal device from his pocket.

He pressed a button.

Every television in the mansion turned on automatically.

A hidden recording began to play.

Twenty years earlier...

Alexander and Adrian stood together inside the Devereaux Vault.

Behind them wasn't stacks of gold.

It wasn't cash.

It wasn't diamonds.

It was a heavily protected underground laboratory.

Rows of servers stretched farther than anyone could see.

Rebecca stared at the screen.

"My God..."

Alexander closed his eyes.

"I told Father we should destroy it."

Adrian smiled.

"And that's why he chose me."

Charles whispered in horror,

"The Devereaux Fortune..."

"...was never money."

Alexander nodded slowly.

"It was information."

Information capable of controlling governments.

Banking systems.

Military contracts.

Political assassinations.

Every secret transaction involving the world's most powerful people...

Had been stored inside that vault.

Whoever possessed those files...

Could blackmail presidents.

Destroy billionaires.

Or crash entire economies overnight.

Lily looked up at her father.

"So... they're trying to kill me because of that?"

Alexander knelt beside her.

"No..."

"They're hunting you because you're the only person who can open the vault."

Everyone looked confused.

Rebecca asked,

"Why only her?"

Alexander reached into Lily's necklace.

Hidden beneath the pendant...

Was a tiny biometric crystal.

"It contains your DNA."

"Our family designed the vault to recognize only one bloodline."

Adrian smiled coldly.

"Exactly."

"And once I have Lily..."

"I won't need anyone else."

Suddenly...

One of Adrian's soldiers aimed his rifle directly at Lily.

Alexander reacted instantly.

He threw himself in front of her.

BANG!

The bullet pierced his chest.

"DADDY!!"

Alexander collapsed into Lily's arms.

Blood spread across the marble floor.

With his final strength...

He pressed the gold coin into Lily's tiny hand.

His voice was barely audible.

"Don't trust..."

"...Charles..."

The room froze.

Lily looked from her dying father...

...to Charles Whitmore.

Charles stood motionless.

His face had gone completely pale.

Then Adrian smiled.

"I was wondering how long it would take before he told you."

Lily's tears stopped.

She slowly stood up.

Her eyes locked onto Charles.

"You..."

"You knew everything..."

Charles lowered his head.

Then, for the first time in twenty-five years...

He confessed five words that changed everything.

May you like

"I helped fake his death."
