CHAPTER 1 — The Child Who Waited in Silence

The first thing I noticed wasn't the snow.
It was the silence.
Outside, Chicago disappeared beneath a raging blizzard. Wind slammed against the glass walls of Reed Global Holdings, covering the streets in sheets of white.
Inside...
Everything was perfectly still.
The lobby lights reflected across polished marble floors. Expensive artwork lined the walls. Security cameras quietly rotated overhead.
It was nearly midnight.
No clients.
No executives.
No employees.
Except one little girl.
She sat completely alone on a wooden bench near the entrance.
She couldn't have been older than seven.
Her dark hair was damp from melted snow.
Her shoes were soaked.
One sleeve of her faded blue coat had been stitched together by hand.
She hugged an old purple backpack as if it contained everything she owned.
Most children would have been crying.
She wasn't.
She simply stared toward the elevators with eyes that looked far older than her face.
My name is Marcus Reed.
People called me ruthless.
For fifteen years I built Reed Global Holdings into one of Chicago's largest investment firms.
I trusted numbers.
Contracts.
Risk assessments.
Never emotions.
Emotions had buried my father.
Emotions had destroyed my mother.
I promised myself they would never control me again.
But something about that child made me stop walking.
"Where are your parents?" I asked softly.
She looked up.
For just one second...
Hope appeared in her eyes.
Then it disappeared.
"I'm waiting for my mommy."
"Does she work here?"
She nodded.
"She cleans the offices."
Her tiny voice never shook.
As though waiting alone in giant buildings had become normal.
"What floor?"
"Wherever they tell her."
Her answer made something inside me ache.
"What does your mother do?"
"She cleans everything."
"What's her name?"
"Lily Parker."
The name meant nothing to me.
And somehow...
That bothered me.
I knew the names of billionaires from three continents.
I knew every executive.
Every investor.
Every acquisition.
Yet I didn't know the woman who cleaned my own building every night.
Then Sophie whispered the sentence that made my heart stop.
"My mommy gets really sick."
"What do you mean?"
"Sometimes she grabs her tummy."
Her little fingers squeezed the backpack tighter.
"Sometimes she can't breathe."
"But she says hospitals are for rich people."
The words struck me like a punch.
Suddenly...
I wasn't standing in my skyscraper anymore.
I was twelve years old again.
Watching my own mother scrub office floors until sunrise.
Watching her smile through unbearable pain because rent came first.
Watching her collapse one rainy morning...
And never wake up again.
I failed her.
I would not fail this little girl.
I called security immediately.
"Find Lily Parker."
Within minutes surveillance footage appeared.
Camera...
After camera...
After camera...
Finally—
Floor Seventeen.
There she was.
A woman barely thirty years old pushing a heavy cleaning cart twice her size.
She suddenly stopped.
Pressed one hand against her abdomen.
Bent over.
And nearly collapsed.
My blood ran cold.
Beside me, Sophie quietly whispered...
"She does that every night."
I ordered another employee to finish Lily's shift immediately.
Twenty minutes later the service elevator opened.
Lily rushed out.
The moment she saw Sophie she ran toward her.
"Sophie!"
She knelt too quickly.
Pain crossed her face.
She almost fell.
I caught her before she hit the floor.
She looked embarrassed.
"I'm sorry, sir."
"Please... don't fire me."
Fire her?
The thought disgusted me.
I arranged a company car to drive them home.
She tried refusing three different times.
Finally Sophie held her mother's hand.
"Mommy... please."
Lily quietly accepted.
But after they left...
Something wouldn't let me sleep.
At exactly 1:37 a.m.
I opened our employee database.
Typed one name.
LILY PARKER.
One confidential file appeared.
Its title froze my heartbeat.
CONFIDENTIAL — EXECUTIVE ACCESS ONLY
I opened it.
The first page looked ordinary.
Employment records.
Payroll.
Emergency contacts.
Then...
A second attachment appeared.
CASE FILE — RESTRICTED FOR TWENTY YEARS
As I continued reading...
The color drained from my face.
Because according to those documents...
Lily Parker wasn't simply my employee.
She was connected to the single event that destroyed my family twenty years ago.
And someone inside my own company had spent two decades making sure I would never discover the truth.
The final sentence on the page read:
"If Marcus Reed ever learns Lily Parker's identity... Project Ashes will fail."
I had never heard those words before.
May you like
But somehow...
They terrified me.
