Chapter 10 - The Final SecretDriven by an irresistible, terrifying curiosity, I took the heavy iron key out to the detached garage that very evening.

The sun was setting, painting the sky in deep shades of bruised purple and fiery orange. The wind whistled through the gaps in the old wooden siding as I knelt before the rusted padlock embedded in the floorboards beneath a pile of old rugs.
My hands shook as I slid the key into the lock.
Click.
The heavy iron shackle sprang open with a loud, echoing snap that sounded like a gunshot in the silent garage.
I slowly pulled the heavy wooden doors upward. A gust of cold, stagnant air rushed out, carrying the scent of damp earth and old paper. I clicked on my flashlight and descended the crumbling concrete steps into the darkness below.
The beam of light cut through the dust, illuminating a small, subterranean room lined with filing cabinets and cardboard boxes.
Curiosity turning to dread, I walked over to the nearest metal cabinet and pulled open the top drawer. It wasn't filled with ordinary family papers.
It was filled with newspaper clippings, police reports, and surveillance photographs dating back over twenty years.
My breath caught in my throat as my eyes scanned the headlines.
“Local Financial Advisor Disappears Under Mysterious Circumstances.” “Police Suspect Foul Play in Millionaire Trust Fund Case.” “Orphaned Child Surives Suspicious Car Crash—Only Relative Admitted to Psychiatric Facility.”
And right in the center of the drawer, pinned to a corkboard, was a photograph of a smiling young man in his early twenties.
It was Michael.
Only, the name printed beneath the photograph wasn't Michael Davis.
It was Michael Vance—the sole surviving heir of the very family whose trust fund my father had managed, and legally dismantled, three decades ago.
The front door upstairs creaked open, followed by the sound of slow, heavy footsteps walking across the wooden floorboards of the garage above.

A familiar, chilling voice echoed down into the dark cellar.
"I told you, Emily," the voice whispered softly from the top of the stairs. "Some families are built on blood and secrets. And you just unlocked the door."
