Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Hospital RoomTwo days after Kara’s arrest, my father finally woke up.

The ICU room was quiet, lit only by the steady, rhythmic beep of the heart monitor and the pale sunlight filtering through the blinds. My mother was still resting, her breathing shallow but stable, but my father’s eyes fluttered open.

"Dad?" I breathed, dropping into the chair beside his bed and grasping his frail, calloused hand.

He blinked sluggishly, his lips dry and cracked. "Em...ily?" he rasped.

"I'm here, Dad. I'm right here."

He tried to sit up, a look of sudden, overwhelming panic crossing his features. His fingers gripped my wrist with surprising strength. "Kara..." he whispered, the name catching in his throat like broken glass. "Where is... Kara?"

"She's gone, Dad," I said softly, stroking his forehead. "The police arrested her. We have the video. We know what she did."

Instead of looking relieved or weeping with sorrow, my father’s eyes widened in sheer terror. A heart-wrenching sound escaped his lips—a mix of a gasp and a sob.

"No," he choked out, his chest heaving as the monitor beside him began to beep faster. "No, Emily... you don't understand."

"Dad, calm down, let me call the doctor—"

"Listen to me!" he shouted, his voice cracking with a desperation that sent a chill straight down my spine. "It wasn't... it wasn't just Kara."

The room seemed to spin. The monitor beeped with frantic urgency.

"What do you mean?" I asked, my voice dropping to a trembling whisper. "Who else was there?"

Before my father could answer, the door to the ICU room clicked open.

Footsteps approached softly from behind.

I turned my head—and the blood froze in my veins.

Standing in the doorway, holding a fresh vase of flowers with a gentle, loving smile, was my husband, Michael.

Only, he wasn't looking at my father with concern. He was looking at him with a cold, calculating glare that I had never seen before in the five years of our marriage.

And then, Michael set the flowers down on the counter, reached into his jacket pocket, and pulled out a pair of latex gloves.
