Chapter 2 - THE SHADOW IN THE HALLWAYThe sight of the man emerging from the shadows behind the federal tactical team sent a sudden, arctic chill through the room.

It was Harrison Vance—Alexander’s estranged older brother and the patriarch of the Vance Global Conglomerate.

Harrison walked with a silver-tipped cane, his tailored pinstripe suit spotless despite the chaotic dampness of the apartment building’s hallway. He looked at the chaos, at the zip-tied thugs, at Carmen pinned against the wall, and finally at Alexander.

"Still using sledgehammers to crack walnuts, little brother?" Harrison said, his voice smooth, aristocratic, and thoroughly cold.

Alexander’s posture stiffened even further. The temperature in the room seemed to drop another ten degrees. "What are you doing here, Harrison? This doesn't concern the board."

Harrison chuckled, a dry, heartless sound. He stepped over a handcuffed guard and leaned slightly on his cane. "When the head of Vance Global’s private intelligence network initiates a Level 1 blackout command on a mid-sized domestic family, the board gets notified. I came to see what catastrophic world event warranted burning down a regional banking system at three in the morning."

Harrison turned his icy gaze toward the inner apartment, catching sight of Sofia sitting trembling on the couch, bruised and bleeding, held tightly in my arms.

Harrison’s eyes flickered with something unreadable—not sympathy, but a dark, calculating interest.

"Ah," Harrison murmured. "The forgotten daughter. The one you abandoned twelve years ago to protect your little corporate secret."

"Shut up, Harrison," Alexander growled, stepping directly between his brother and the view of our apartment. "You have no place here."

Carmen, seeing a potential lifeline in this powerful new billionaire, clawed her way up the wall, her voice desperate. "Sir! Please! I am Carmen Robles! My family controls the shipping licenses in the Eastern District! This man... your brother... he is destroying my life’s work over a domestic misunderstanding!"

Harrison slowly turned his head to look at Carmen. He looked at her the way an exterminator looks at a cockroach crawling across a marble floor.

"A domestic misunderstanding?" Harrison echoed softly. He walked closer to Carmen until his face was inches from hers. "You beat a Vance heir. You locked a woman carrying the bloodline of the world's third-largest private defense contractor in a hotel room and allowed your cowardly son to watch."

Carmen swallowed hard, her mouth completely dry. "Vance... heir?"

She looked frantically between Alexander and Harrison. The realization hit her like a freight train slamming into a brick wall.

She hadn't just attacked a defenseless girl from a divorced family. She had ordered a hit on the direct granddaughter of the Vance Global Empire—a family whose shadow wealth made regional judges and politicians look like beggars.

"Javier..." Carmen choked out, looking at her son on the floor. "Javier, what did you do?"

Javier was shaking so violently his teeth were chattering. "I... I didn't know! Sofia said her father was just an independent consultant! She said he lived off a modest pension!"

"She told you the truth," Alexander said, his voice deadly. "I am retired. I chose to live simply so my daughter wouldn't be hunted by people like my brother. But you... you forced my hand."

Alexander turned to the federal marshal. "Take them into custody. Charge them with conspiracy to commit murder, extortion, and human trafficking. Let them sit in a maximum-security holding cell until morning."

"Wait!" Harrison interrupted sharply, holding up his hand.

The marshals paused, looking back and forth between the two powerful brothers.

Harrison smiled, a terrifying expression that showed too many teeth. "Alexander, you always were too legalistic. Federal charges take months. Trials take years. Appeals draw publicity. You want to ruin them? Do it the Vance way."

Harrison reached into his coat and pulled out a thick crimson folder, tossing it onto the floor in front of Carmen.

"What is that?" Carmen whispered, tears finally running down her face, ruining her heavy makeup.

"That," Harrison said softly, "is the complete audit of every illegal offshore account, every bribe your brother ever took, and every fraudulent deed your real estate company ever forged. But more importantly... it contains the promissory notes for the $40 million debt your husband took out from the syndicate in Miami before he died."

Carmen’s face drained of all color. "How... how do you have those?"

"I bought them twenty minutes ago," Harrison replied simply. "Which means, Carmen, you don't owe the banks anymore. You owe me. And unlike my soft-hearted brother here, I don't send people to prison. I foreclose on their lives."

Harrison turned back to Alexander. "The Robles empire is dead. But this leaves us with a problem, brother. You used central network codes to execute this raid. The board knows you’re active again. They want you back in the CEO chair. And if you refuse..."

Harrison glanced past Alexander, his eyes fixing directly onto Sofia.

"...they will consider your daughter a liability to the firm’s security."

HOOOK / CLIFFHANGER: Alexander’s hand shot out like a strike of lightning, grabbing Harrison by the throat and slamming the billionaire patriarch against the concrete wall of the hallway! "Touch my daughter," Alexander hissed, his veins bulging on his forehead, "and I will burn the Vance empire to the ground with you inside it!" But Harrison just laughed through his choked windpipe, pointing a trembling finger down at the street. Down below, the sound of heavy explosion echoed through the night air—a massive fireball erupted right where Sofia’s $1.8 million condo building stood in the distance!
