Chapter 7 - THE TRIBUNAL OF SHADOWSThe sound of heavy helicopter blades chopping through the rainy night air was deafening. THUMP-THUMP-THUMP-THUMP.

Four massive, pitch-black military transports hovered directly over the ruined city block, their searchlights cutting through the thick smoke of the gas fires like giant white spears.
Ropes dropped from the bellies of the aircraft. Dozens of heavily armed operators clad in unmarked grey tactical gear abseiled down into the crater with terrifying efficiency.
Up in the lobby, the federal marshals pulled me and Sofia back into the shadows.
"Who are those guys?!" the Tactical Commander shouted, aiming his rifle at the descending grey soldiers. "Those aren't state or federal troops!"
"They're Vance Global Private Security," I said, my voice trembling as the realization hit me. "Harrison’s ultimate shadow force."
Down in the pit, the white magnesium flare of the thermite drive had died out, leaving a charred hole in the earth where the locket had been. The financial ledger was completely incinerated—gone forever.
Julian was coughing violently, his suit burned, his hands scorched, but he was alive. Alexander had taken the brunt of the thermal blast on his heavy leather coat, which was now smoking and torn.
Alexander pushed himself up, his face covered in soot and blood, his breathing heavy and ragged.
Before he could stand, four grey tactical operators surrounded him, pointing high-caliber automatic rifles directly at his chest.
A tall figure stepped out from the lead helicopter’s shadow, walking gracefully across the ruined, burning debris.
It wasn't Harrison. It wasn't Julian.
It was an elderly woman wearing an immaculate white trench coat, holding a heavy diamond-encrusted cane. Her silver hair was pinned back in an elegant, spotless bun.
Sofia gasped from the lobby entrance above. "Grandmother...?"
Victoria Vance. The true, undisputed matriarch of the Vance family. The woman who had built the empire from the blood of three generations and had been hiding in a private Swiss clinic for fifteen years, rumored to be on her deathbed.
She was very much alive.
Victoria walked up to the edge of the pit, looking down at her two sons and her grandson with utter, icy disdain.
"What a pathetic display," Victoria’s sharp, aristocratic voice rang out over the hum of the helicopter engines. "My sons fighting like feral dogs in a gutter over an old man’s ledger. And my grandson... failing to execute a simple acquisition."
Julian scrambled up onto his knees, pointing a finger at Alexander. "Grandmother! Father destroyed the ledger! He burned the central override keys! He ruined Vance Global's defense merger!"
Victoria didn't even look at Julian. She flicked her wrist, and one of her grey operators struck Julian across the temple with the butt of a rifle, dropping him instantly into the mud, unconscious.
"Silence, boy," Victoria said softly. "You played at being 'The Architect,' but you were nothing more than a child playing with matches."
She turned her sharp, icy gaze onto Alexander.
"Alexander," she said, her voice dropping into a tone of quiet, dangerous command. "You left the family twelve years ago to live like a beggar. You thought you could hide your little secret life with this... middle-class woman and her child."
She raised her eyes, looking directly up at me and Sofia standing in the ruined lobby above.
"Grandmother, leave them out of this," Alexander growled, forcing his battered body to stand tall despite his injuries. "The ledger is gone. The codes are destroyed. Vance Global has no claim over my daughter or her life."
Victoria chuckled, a dark, melodic sound that chilled me to the bone.
"Do you really think I care about that stupid ledger, Alexander?" Victoria asked. "The money was never in the accounts. The money was always in the name."
She signaled to her guards. Two operators walked over to Harrison—who was still handcuffed in the custody of the federal marshals above—and casually relieved the marshals of their weapons at gunpoint, bringing Harrison down into the pit.
Harrison looked terrified, his usual smug composure completely shattered in the presence of his mother. "Mother... I was trying to preserve the firm’s assets—"
"You failed, Harrison," Victoria interrupted coldly. "You let a petty regional family like the Robleses create a public scandal that brought federal authorities to our doorstep. You proved you are unfit to lead."
Victoria turned back to Alexander.
"Harrison is stripped of his executive power," Victoria announced. "Julian will be placed in a private medical facility in Siberia where he will never see the light of day again. That leaves only you, Alexander."
Alexander stared at his mother. "I retired twelve years ago."
"You don't retire from this family," Victoria said softly. "You either take the chair, or your bloodline is erased so the firm can start fresh."
She gestured toward Sofia up on the balcony.
"Your daughter, Sofia," Victoria continued, her voice dripping with cruel pragmatism. "She is thirty percent owner of the Uptown development trust. Tomorrow morning, she will sign the complete merger documents transferring all municipal titles to Vance Global. In return, she lives. If she refuses..."
Victoria raised her diamond cane, pointing it straight at my head.

"...your ex-wife dies tonight, right here in this alley."
HOOOK / CLIFFHANGER: Sofia didn't scream. She didn't cry. Instead, she slowly walked down the crumbling steps into the burning alley, holding a small black satellite phone that was playing an audio recording on full speaker volume! A voice echoed from the phone—a voice that made Victoria Vance’s face turn completely pale: "This is the Director of the International Monetary Crime Division. We have been listening to every word on this channel for thirty minutes..."
