Chapter 3 - ASHES OF SECRETSThe blast wave from the explosion miles away vibrated through the city, shaking the glass windows of my apartment. A thick plume of dark orange flame and black smoke rose into the 3:30 a.m. sky on the horizon—right over the luxury skyline where Sofia’s $1.8 million condo sat.

"Sofia!" I screamed, running back to the window.
Sofia pulled herself up from the couch, her face pale with horror as she watched the fire gut the building in the distance. "My... my condo... all my father’s old papers were in the safe..."
Alexander let go of Harrison’s throat. Harrison stumbled back, coughing, but his cold smile never faded.
"You see, Alexander?" Harrison gasped, adjusting his tie with bruised fingers. "You aren't the only one who knows how to erase evidence. The moment Carmen’s men failed to secure the title transfers, a fail-safe was triggered. Someone didn't want the paper trail inside that condo exposed to the feds."
Alexander stared at the distant fire, his mind racing. He turned sharply toward Carmen, who was trembling on her knees, staring at the distant flames in total shock.
"That wasn't you," Alexander realized instantly. "You're too stupid to deploy thermite charges. Who gave you the order to target Sofia’s condo?"
Carmen shook her head frantically, terrified out of her mind. "I don't know! I swear to God I don't know! Three weeks ago, a man called my office! He said if I forced Sofia to sign over the condo to my family, he would give us 30% of the Robles group’s international debt relief! He said... he said Sofia’s father was a ghost who would never show up!"
Alexander stepped closer to Carmen, grabbing her by her hair, forcing her to look him dead in the eye. "What was the man’s name?"
"He... he never gave a name!" Carmen sobbed, completely broken. "He only called himself 'The Architect'! He said the condo contained the master ledger for the 2012 Vance Global offshore restructuring!"
I gasped, looking at Alexander. 2012. That was the year Alexander left us. The year he signed away his rights to our family, claiming he was going into financial debt and needed to protect us from his creditors.
It was all a lie. He hadn't left to protect us from debt—he had left because he was hiding something so dangerous that even his own family was willing to blow up a skyscraper to get it.
"Alexander..." I said, my voice trembling with a mixture of anger and betrayal. "What was in that apartment? What did you give our daughter?!"
Alexander turned to me, his eyes filled with a deep, haunting pain. "Elena... I gave her that condo because the land deed itself was coded with the encryption keys to the Vance family's illegal black-budget accounts. I thought hiding it in plain sight under a quiet girl's name would keep it safe forever."
"You used our daughter as a human vault?!" I yelled, stepping toward him, completely ignoring the federal guards and Harrison. "You brought this danger to her door?!"
"I did it to keep you both alive!" Alexander roared back, losing his composure for the first time. "If the board knew where those files were twelve years ago, they would have executed both of you to clear the balance sheet!"
"How touching," Harrison interrupted, dusting off his coat. "A tragic family reunion. But now the evidence is burning, Alexander. The ledger is gone. And without that ledger, you have no leverage over the board. You’re just an old man with a angry ex-wife and a battered daughter."
"Is that what you think, Harrison?" Alexander said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.
He turned slowly and walked over to Sofia. He knelt beside her once again.
"Sofia," Alexander said gently. "Do you remember the silver locket I gave you for your sixteenth birthday? The one I told you never to take off?"
Sofia’s hand reflexively went to her neck. Her eyes widened. "The... the locket? You said it was Mom’s grandmother’s."
"It wasn't," Alexander said softly. "It’s a hardware cold-storage drive. The condo was just the decoy. The real ledger... has been resting against your heart for eight years."
Everyone in the room went dead silent.
Harrison’s eyes narrowed into slits. The arrogant smile vanished completely from his face.
Carmen stared in absolute disbelief, realizing that the $1.8 million real estate she had beaten a girl over was nothing more than an empty, worthless shell.
Sofia slowly unclasped the small silver chain from around her neck and held the tiny locket in her palm. It looked so delicate, so innocent—yet it contained the power to bring down a global corporation and put dozens of billionaires behind bars.
"Hand it over, Alexander," Harrison said, his voice stripped of all playfulness. He reached into his suit jacket, and two of his personal bodyguards who were standing in the shadows of the stairwell stepped forward, drawing silenced handguns.
The federal marshals immediately raised their rifles, targeting Harrison’s men.
"Drop your weapons!" the marshal commander bellowed. "This is a federal operation!"
"This is a corporate acquisition," Harrison corrected coldly. "And federal marshals can be bought, reassigned, or retired with a single phone call to the Department of Justice."
The atmosphere in the cramped hallway reached a boiling point. Weapons were drawn on all sides. Sofia cowered against my chest, crying softly. Javier was hyperventilating on the floor.
Alexander stood up, taking the locket from Sofia’s hand. He held it up between his thumb and forefinger, right in front of Harrison’s face.

"You want it, Harrison?" Alexander asked quietly. "Come take it."
HOOOK / CLIFFHANGER: Before Harrison could make a move, Javier suddenly scrambled up from the floor like a desperate rat. He grabbed a shattered piece of heavy oak wood from the broken door frame and slammed it into the back of Alexander’s head! Alexander collapsed to his knees, dropping the silver locket. It bounced across the floorboards—straight toward the edge of the open stairwell!
