Chapter 6 - THE FALL OF VANCE GLOBALThe world seemed to split open.

The underground gas main explosion ruptured the entire street block, sending violent shockwaves tearing through the pavement. Asphalt shattered like glass. The floodlights flickered out as power lines snapped overhead, showering the alley in blinding sparks.

Alexander reacted instinctively. As the concrete beneath the building entrance began to crack and sink, he threw his body backward, shoving Sofia and me into the reinforced interior lobby of the apartment building just before the front steps collapsed into the smoking crater below.

"HOLD ONTO SOMETHING!" Alexander bellowed over the deafening roar of twisting metal and roaring gas fires.

Inside the crater, where the alley had once been, smoke billowed up in thick black clouds.

Julian’s armored SUV tipped sideways into the widening trench, its heavy tires spinning uselessly against the crumbling dirt. Julian lost his footing on the edge of the vehicle’s step, slipping down into the mud.

Suddenly, a hand—burned, bloodied, and covered in soot—clutched Julian’s ankle with absolute, hysterical strength.

It was Carmen Robles.

Her face was smeared with dark soot and her own son's blood. Her eyes were wide, unhinged, filled with the terrifying madness of a mother who had lost everything in a single night.

"You killed my boy..." Carmen rasped, her voice torn to shreds by screaming. "You killed my Javier!"

"Get off me, you insane bitch!" Julian snarled, kicking violently with his free foot, smashing his heavy boot into Carmen’s face.

CRACK.

Carmen’s nose broke, but she didn't let go. She used her remaining strength to drag Julian down with her into the burning gas trench, screaming like a demon dragging its captor down to hell.

"Dad!" Sofia yelled from the shattered edge of the lobby floor, watching the horror unfold below.

Alexander didn't hesitate. He tied his heavy leather belt around a reinforced steel pillar in the lobby, tossed the other end to me, and slid down the crumbling dirt embankment directly into the burning trench.

"Alexander! No!" I screamed, holding the leather strap with all my strength alongside two federal marshals who had survived the blast.

Down in the pit, the heat was suffocating. Blue flames leaped from broken gas lines, filling the air with the sharp, toxic stench of sulfur and burning rubber.

Julian was struggling frantically against Carmen’s death grip, his gun lost in the mud. He saw Alexander descending through the smoke like an vengeful specter.

"Dad! Help me!" Julian screamed, his cold composure finally shattering into pure, pathetic fear. "She's going to drag me into the main line!"

Alexander landed heavily in the mud beside them. He looked down at his son—the boy he had tried to hide, the man who had ordered his sister’s torture and shot his own accomplice in cold blood.

Then Alexander looked at Carmen. She was fading fast, her strength draining from massive internal injuries, but her grip on Julian’s ankle was like a steel vise.

"Alexander..." Carmen wheezed, blood spilling from her mouth as she looked up at him. "Destroy... them all..."

Her eyes rolled back, and her hands finally went limp. Carmen Robles died in the mud of that alley, holding onto the foot of the man who had used her family like disposable trash.

Julian frantically kicked her hand away, scrambling backward in the mud, pulling himself toward the silver locket that lay glowing near a pool of burning gas.

"I still have it!" Julian cackled hysterically, picking up the locket. "I have the codes! You can't stop me, Dad! I own Vance Global now!"

Alexander walked up to Julian slowly, completely ignoring the heat of the flames licking at his clothes.

"You don't get it, Julian," Alexander said quietly.

He didn't draw a gun. He didn't reach for the locket. He simply reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, old-fashioned golden pocket watch—the twin to the silver locket.

Julian’s laughter stopped dead. His eyes fixed on the golden watch. "What... what is that?"

"The silver locket you hold," Alexander said, his voice ringing out over the roar of the fire, "is the encryption key. But the gold watch... is the purge switch. I built them as a pair twelve years ago. If the key is activated without the switch within fifty feet..."

Julian looked down at the silver locket in his hand.

It was glowing bright red. The internal circuit board inside the locket was heating up rapidly, humming with a high-pitched, dangerous frequency.

"No..." Julian whimpered, trying to throw the locket away. "NO!"

"It’s a micro-thermite drive, Julian," Alexander said coldly. "It doesn't just erase data. It erases everything within two meters."

Julian panicked, trying to hurl the scorching metal away from his chest—

HOOOK / CLIFFHANGER: Alexander tackled Julian backward into the dirt, shielding his son’s head just as the silver locket violently detonated in a blinding flash of white magnesium fire! When the smoke cleared, Alexander was lying unconscious on top of his son, and a shadowy fleet of un-marked helicopters began descending from the storm clouds directly above the burning city block!
