CHAPTER 1 — The Woman Nobody Saw

Vincent Torino had survived thirty years in the mafia.

He had walked away from ambushes.

He had stared down assassins.

He had buried men who believed they were smarter than him.

But on that rainy Tuesday night...

the only reason he was still breathing was because the maid grabbed his arm before anyone else could.

The closet smelled of cedar wood and expensive Italian suits.

Outside, Marcus slowly walked closer.

Each footstep sounded like a countdown.

Vincent could almost predict what would happen next.

Marcus would open the closet.

Three gunshots.

One funeral.

One new king.

Elena never blinked.

Her pistol remained hidden beneath her uniform while her other hand stayed firmly over Vincent's mouth.

She whispered barely loud enough for him to hear.

"They'll hear your breathing."

Vincent nodded.

Only then did she slowly remove her hand.

For the first time in years...

the feared mafia boss obeyed someone else's command.

Outside, Marcus stopped directly in front of the closet.

The handle moved.

Slowly.

Vincent's muscles tightened.

The door opened—

Only halfway.

One of Marcus's men laughed.

"Forget the closet."

"He wouldn't hide like a frightened child."

Marcus hesitated.

Vincent knew that hesitation.

Marcus had inherited it from his father.

Whenever he doubted himself...

he rubbed his thumb against his wedding ring.

Marcus did it now.

Then he closed the closet again.

Footsteps faded.

Vincent released a silent breath.

Elena didn't.

"They're still here," she whispered.

"They're pretending to leave."

Exactly thirty seconds later...

the footsteps returned.

Marcus suddenly yanked the closet door open.

Rows of expensive jackets swayed gently.

Empty.

He stared for several long seconds.

Then cursed under his breath.

"Search downstairs."

The men disappeared again.

Only after another full minute did Elena press on the back wall.

Click.

The wooden panel behind the hanging suits slid open.

Vincent froze.

A hidden tunnel.

Inside his own bedroom.

One he had never known existed.

"You..."

he whispered.

"How do you know about this?"

"I built it."

Vincent stared.

"You built..."

"My father did."

She corrected herself.

"He designed hidden escape routes for this mansion twenty-seven years ago."

Vincent's eyes narrowed.

"My architect died decades ago."

Elena looked directly into his eyes.

"No."

"You were told he died."

The tunnel stretched into darkness.

For the first time in thirty years...

Vincent Torino realized he knew almost nothing about the woman who had quietly served breakfast every morning.

They hurried through the narrow concrete passage.

Dust covered the walls.

Ancient electrical cables ran overhead.

The tunnel finally opened into an abandoned wine cellar beneath the estate.

Elena stopped.

She listened.

Silence.

Then she looked at Vincent.

"My real name isn't Elena."

Vincent said nothing.

"My name is Isabella Romano."

The name hit Vincent harder than any bullet.

Romano.

The family that disappeared twenty-four years ago.

The family everyone believed Vincent himself had ordered executed.

Impossible.

Vincent whispered...

"You should be dead."

"I almost was."

Her eyes filled with pain.

"My father hid me before your men arrived."

Vincent shook his head.

"I never gave that order."

"I know."

Those two words changed everything.

"You know?"

"I've known for three years."

Vincent stared.

"Then why work here?"

"Because someone else did."

She looked straight at him.

"And that person..."

"is upstairs pretending to be your family."

The silence became heavier than gunfire.

Marcus wasn't stealing the empire.

He had spent years rewriting its history.

And Vincent had never seen it.
