CHAPTER 10 — The Basement That Never Existed

The helicopter landed on the roof of Torino Manor just before dawn.
Smoke still drifted from the burning ruins of Blackwater Island far out at sea.
Vincent didn't waste a second.
Still carrying the small metallic key his brother had died protecting, he strode through the front doors of the mansion he had called home for three decades.
It suddenly felt unfamiliar.
Every portrait.
Every staircase.
Every marble column.
Every memory.
A lie.
Isabella followed close behind, scanning every hallway with her pistol raised.
"We're running out of time," she said.
"The Queen may be gone, but her people aren't."
Vincent stopped in the center of the grand foyer.
"There is no basement beneath this house."
"There is now."
Isabella knelt beside the enormous marble crest embedded in the floor.
The Torino family symbol.
She brushed away years of wax and dust.
Hidden beneath one corner...
was an old keyhole.
Vincent slowly inserted the tiny metal key.
Nothing happened.
Then...
the entire mansion shook.
Deep beneath their feet, ancient machinery groaned to life.
A circular section of the marble floor silently slid aside.
Cold air rushed upward.
An iron staircase disappeared into complete darkness.
Vincent stared in disbelief.
"I've lived here for thirty-two years..."
"...and never knew."
"You weren't supposed to."
They descended.
The staircase seemed endless.
One level.
Then another.
Finally they reached an enormous underground chamber.
It wasn't a vault.
It was an archive.
Thousands of shelves stretched into the darkness.
Boxes.
Ledgers.
Photographs.
Film reels.
Birth certificates.
DNA records.
Government seals from countries around the world.
Every file carried the same silver phoenix symbol.
Vincent picked up the nearest folder.
His hands began to tremble.
PROJECT PHOENIX
SUBJECT 017
Birth Name: Alexander Romano
Vincent froze.
Alexander Romano.
Not Vincent Torino.
His breathing became uneven.
"No..."
He flipped through the pages.
A newborn photograph.
Medical reports.
Fingerprint records.
Everything proved the impossible.
Forty-three years earlier...
a baby named Alexander Romano had vanished after the massacre.
That baby...
was Vincent.
The Queen had stolen him from the Romano family, erased his identity, and placed him inside the Torino household to ensure two bloodlines would destroy each other forever.
His entire life had been engineered before he could even speak.
Vincent dropped to one knee.
Every memory of his childhood suddenly felt poisoned.
"My father..."
He whispered.
"Was never my father."
"No," Isabella answered softly.
"He raised you."
"But someone else gave you your blood."
Tears filled Vincent's eyes for the first time in decades.
Everything he had fought to protect...
had been built on a stolen name.
Before either of them could speak again...
a slow clap echoed through the archive.
Someone had been waiting.
A tall man stepped from the shadows wearing a perfectly tailored black suit.
He looked no older than fifty.
Yet there was something unsettlingly familiar about his face.
He smiled at Vincent.
"I wondered how long it would take you to find the truth."
Vincent instinctively raised his pistol.
"Who are you?"
The man reached into his coat and removed a faded photograph.
It showed a young couple holding a newborn baby.
He handed it to Vincent.
On the back were four handwritten words.
Our son. Alexander.
The man looked directly into Vincent's eyes.
His voice remained calm.
"I've spent forty-three years searching for you."
Vincent's fingers tightened around the photograph.
"...Who are you?"
The stranger smiled through tears.
"I'm your father."
Silence swallowed the underground chamber.
Before Vincent could answer—
A deafening explosion tore through the ceiling.
Concrete crashed down.
Gunfire erupted from every entrance.
Masked soldiers flooded into the archive from all directions.
The stranger shoved Vincent behind a stone pillar.
"Stay down!"
Bullets shredded the shelves, sending decades of hidden secrets flying through the air like snow.
As chaos consumed the archive...
Vincent looked at the man protecting him with his own body.
For the first time in his life...
he wasn't sure which man had truly been his father—
The one who raised him...
or the one willing to die to save him.
