CHAPTER 1 — The Closet of No Return

Vincent Torino had survived thirty years in the mafia.

He had escaped assassins in crowded restaurants.

He had walked away from bomb attacks that destroyed entire buildings.

He had stared rival crime bosses in the eyes without blinking.

But none of those moments compared to what happened inside his own bedroom.

The moment he quietly pushed open the bedroom door after returning home hours earlier than expected, everything changed.

A hand exploded from the darkness.

Cold fingers clamped tightly over his mouth.

Another arm wrapped around his chest with surprising strength.

"Don't make a sound..."

The whisper was barely audible.

Vincent instinctively reached for the pistol beneath his jacket.

Before he could draw it, the woman shoved him backward into the walk-in closet.

The heavy wooden door closed with barely a click.

Darkness swallowed them.

His eyes adjusted slowly.

It was Elena.

The maid.

The quiet woman who had cleaned the mansion every morning for the last three years.

The woman who never spoke unless spoken to.

The woman nobody noticed.

Yet now...

She was holding the most feared mafia boss in the city completely still.

Her breathing was fast.

Her eyes weren't frightened.

They were calculating.

Outside...

Footsteps echoed across the marble floor.

Three men.

No...

Four.

Someone opened Vincent's wardrobe.

Someone else searched beneath the bed.

Metal scraped softly.

Gun barrels.

Silencers.

Professional killers.

Vincent remained perfectly still.

His instincts screamed that Elena wasn't lying.

One careless movement...

One accidental cough...

One creaking floorboard...

...and the closet would become his coffin.

Then came the voice that froze his blood.

"Search everything again."

Marcus.

His nephew.

His own flesh and blood.

Vincent felt the world tilt beneath him.

Marcus?

Impossible.

The boy had been twelve when Vincent buried his father.

Vincent had paid for his education.

Protected him.

Trusted him.

Even introduced him to the inner circle of the organization.

He wasn't just family.

He was supposed to become the future of the Torino empire.

Yet now...

Marcus calmly ordered armed men through Vincent's private bedroom.

"They think he always comes home at exactly nine," Marcus said confidently.

"He never changes his schedule."

Another man laughed.

"Then why isn't he here?"

Marcus answered without hesitation.

"Because Tony called me ten minutes ago."

"He left the warehouse exactly like always."

"If he's late..."

"...someone warned him."

Vincent slowly turned toward Elena.

She looked away.

For just one second.

That tiny movement told him something.

She knew much more than she had revealed.

Outside, another drawer slammed shut.

"Nothing."

"The office is empty."

"The safe only has cash."

Marcus cursed.

"The documents have to be somewhere."

"My uncle never trusted banks."

"He hides everything inside this house."

One assassin suddenly stopped moving.

Silence.

Vincent could hear only his own heartbeat.

The footsteps slowly approached the closet.

Closer...

Closer...

The doorknob moved.

Elena silently reached beneath her maid's apron.

Vincent expected cleaning gloves.

Instead...

She pulled out a suppressed pistol.

His eyes widened.

She wasn't trembling anymore.

She aimed directly at the closet door.

The handle slowly turned.

One more inch...

One more second...

Then a phone rang.

Marcus answered immediately.

"What?"

A pause.

His expression changed.

"Are you certain?"

More silence.

Marcus slowly smiled.

"Interesting..."

He looked toward the closet.

"No need to search in there."

"We have a much bigger problem."

The footsteps moved away.

Vincent released a breath he hadn't realized he was holding.

But Elena didn't lower the gun.

Instead she whispered something that made his entire world collapse.

"Marcus isn't the one leading this."

May you like

"He's following orders..."

"...from someone living inside this mansion."
