Chapter 2 - The Whisper of the Scalpel

😱 "HE'S IN THE HOUSE!" THE DOCTOR'S LIES ARE EXPOSED, BUT A DEADLY TRAP IS ALREADY SPRUNG! 😱The basement of the Moretti estate was not a cellar; it was a soundproofed concrete chamber designed for confessions.

Dr. Ronald Thorne sat tied to a heavy steel chair, a single halogen bulb casting harsh light over his sweat-drenched, terrified face. His glasses were crooked, and his expensive tweed suit was stained with dirt from when Lorenzo's men had snatched him from his suburban home.

The heavy steel door groaned open. Lorenzo walked in, followed by Leo and Elena.

Elena shrank back, clutching Lorenzo’s sleeve instinctively. Lorenzo felt her touch, a warm contrast to the freezing wrath consuming him, but he did not pull away.

"L-Lorenzo," Dr. Thorne stammered, his voice cracking. "Thank God! Your men, they kidnapped me! I am a respected physician—"

"Shut up," Lorenzo said. The silence that followed was suffocating. Lorenzo dragged a second chair over, sitting directly opposite the doctor. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "My mother is dead, Ronald."

"It was a tragic heart failure, Lorenzo! She was old, her cardiovascular system was failing—"

"Elena," Lorenzo called out without looking back. "Tell the doctor what you found."

Elena stepped forward into the harsh light, her heart hammering against her ribs. Thorne's eyes widened in recognition, terror flashing across his features.

"You," Thorne hissed. "You're the incompetent little thief I fired!"

"I didn't steal anything, Dr. Thorne," Elena said, her voice shaking but resolute. "You poisoned Isabella Moretti with potassium chloride. I saw the bag. And I have the torn order sheet with the authorization code."

Thorne went pale, his jaw trembling. "You're insane! No court would believe a disgruntled, fired waitress over me!"

"We aren't in a court, Ronald," Lorenzo said softly. He reached into his coat and pulled out a surgical scalpel, spinning it lazily between his fingers. The silver blade caught the light. "In this room, I am the judge, the jury, and the executioner. And unlike the state, I don't need a reasonable doubt. I just need to know how much my uncle paid you to murder my mother."

"I... I don't know what you're talking about!" Thorne cried, flinching as Lorenzo touched the cold tip of the scalpel to his cheek. "Marcello had nothing to do with this! It was a medical decision!"

"My mother was recovering, Thorne. She was going to come home next week," Lorenzo growled, his composure finally slipping, exposing the monster underneath. He pressed the blade just enough to draw a thin line of crimson down the doctor's cheek. "Tell me the truth, or I will dissect you piece by piece, starting with the fingers you used to write that prescription."

"Okay! Okay! Stop!" Thorne screamed, tears streaming down his face, mixing with the blood. "It was Marcello! He came to me a month ago. He said Isabella knew too much about his offshore accounts. She was going to tell you that Marcello was skimming millions from the family's port operations to fund a coup! He threatened my family, Lorenzo! He said if I didn't make it look like natural causes, he would kill my daughter!"

Elena gasped, covering her mouth.

Lorenzo’s eyes were dead. "Where is Marcello now?"

"He... he’s hosting a meeting tonight at the pier. He's bringing in his allies. He thinks he's taking over the syndicate tomorrow," Thorne sobbed. "Please, Lorenzo. I had no choice!"

Lorenzo stood up, wiping the scalpel clean on Thorne’s tie. "There is always a choice."

Suddenly, the overhead lights flickered and went out, plunging the concrete room into absolute darkness.

"Don Lorenzo, we have a breach!" Leo's voice boomed through the dark. "The security feeds just went black!"

A split second later, the deafening rat-tat-tat of automatic gunfire erupted from the floor above. High-caliber rounds chewed through the ceiling, raining plaster dust down on them.

"Get down!" Lorenzo roared.

He lunged through the darkness, grabbing Elena and throwing his body over hers as concrete exploded around them. Elena screamed, clutching Lorenzo's coat as the sound of war echoed throughout the mansion.

"They're inside the house!" Leo yelled, firing back toward the doorway.

Amidst the chaos, a muffled thud echoed near the center of the room. When the emergency backup lights flickered on, casting a dim, red glow over the chamber, Elena let out a blood-curdling shriek.

Dr. Ronald Thorne was slumped forward in his chair. A single, clean bullet hole was drilled directly into his forehead.

The silencer-equipped assassin had bypassed the guards, cut the power, and executed the only living witness to Marcello’s conspiracy. And they were still in the house.
