Chapter 3 - The Traitor's Waltz

⚠️ THE MAFIA BOSS TRUSTED HIM FOR 20 YEARS... THE SHOCKING BETRAYAL THAT NEARLY KILLED THEM BOTH! ⚠️"We have to move! Now!" Lorenzo pulled Elena to her feet.
The red emergency lights cast a bloody hue over the concrete walls. Gunfire still echoed from the upper levels—the unmistakable sound of a hostile takeover. Marcello wasn't waiting for tomorrow. He was purging the loyalists tonight.
"Leo, hold the basement stairs. Do not let anyone down," Lorenzo commanded, pulling a second handgun from a holster under his arm and checking the magazine.
"Go, Boss! I'll buy you time!" Leo replied, positioning himself behind a concrete pillar with his assault rifle raised.
Lorenzo grabbed Elena's hand. Her fingers were ice-cold, but she clung to him as if he were her only lifeline. He led her through a hidden escape tunnel behind a false wine cellar wall. It was narrow, damp, and smelled of earth.
"Where are we going?" Elena whispered, her voice cracking as they hurried through the dark tunnel.
"My personal safehouse. A cabin in the woods three miles from here," Lorenzo muttered, his eyes scanning the darkness ahead. "My uncle knows all of my official properties. He doesn't know about this one. It was my mother’s private retreat."
They ran for what felt like miles until they emerged into the stormy night through a hidden hatch in a dilapidated tool shed deep in the forest. The rain was still pouring, washing the sweat and plaster dust from their skin.
Lorenzo guided her through the dense trees until a small, rustic log cabin appeared in the clearing. It looked humble from the outside, but the heavy steel-reinforced door and bulletproof glass windows told a different story.
Once inside, Lorenzo locked the heavy deadbolts and activated the cabin's independent security system. The lights flickered on, revealing a cozy interior with a stone fireplace, plush furniture, and a kitchen.
Elena collapsed onto the floor, her legs completely giving out. She buried her face in her hands and began to sob. The adrenaline was fading, leaving behind the crushing weight of reality. She was a waitress. A nobody. And now, she was caught in the middle of a bloody mafia war.
Lorenzo watched her for a moment. He set his weapons on the kitchen counter, walked over, and knelt in front of her. He didn't know how to comfort people. He was a weapon, trained to destroy, not to heal. But seeing her shiver in her soaked uniform pulled at something buried deep inside his chest.
He gently reached out and pulled her into his arms.
Elena stiffened for a second, then clung to him, sobbing into his chest. He was warm, solid, and for the first time in three days, she felt safe.
"I'm sorry," she wept. "I'm so sorry. I should have just minded my own business. I shouldn't have said anything about the chart."
"If you hadn't," Lorenzo said, his voice surprisingly soft as he stroked her wet hair, "I would have never known the truth. I would have let my mother’s killer stand by my side, calling me family. You saved me from that, Elena."
He pulled back, looking into her tear-filled eyes. "But now, my uncle has declared war. He tried to kill us both tonight. He thinks he has won. He thinks I'm dead in that basement."
Lorenzo stood up, his face hardening into a mask of pure vengeance. "Tomorrow, he is hosting a grand gala at the Moretti Plaza Hotel to celebrate his 'accession' to the throne. He has invited all the heads of the Chicago families. He wants to prove he is the undisputed king."

"What are you going to do?" Elena asked, wiping her tears.
Lorenzo looked at her, a dark, dangerous smile playing on his lips. "We are going to attend his party. And we are going to dance."
