Chapter 5 - The Poisoned Legacy

😭 THE CHILLING TRUTH ABOUT ISABELLA'S DEATH... IT WAS NEVER ABOUT THE MAFIA! 😭BANG!
A gunshot rang out, echoing off the high ceilings of the ballroom.
But it wasn't Marcello’s gun.
Lorenzo had drawn his weapon with blinding speed. The bullet struck Marcello directly in his shoulder, spinning him around and sending his revolver clattering to the floor. Marcello collapsed, clutching his bleeding arm, groaning in agony.
Lorenzo walked up the steps, his face completely devoid of mercy. He pressed the barrel of his gun against Marcello’s forehead.
"Please, Lorenzo... we are family," Marcello begged, sobbing. "Your father... your father would not want this!"
"My father is dead. And you killed my mother," Lorenzo said. His finger tightened on the trigger.
"Wait!" Elena’s voice cut through the heavy silence.
Lorenzo paused, his eyes cutting to her. "Elena, step back. This is family business."
"No, Lorenzo, look at the screens!" Elena cried, pointing to the tablet Leo was still holding. "Look at the date on the offshore bank transfers. Look at the beneficiary name on the trust!"
Lorenzo frowned, looking down at the document in his hand, then at the tablet.
The offshore account wasn't just a slush fund for a coup. The trust had been established twenty-two years ago. And the legal beneficiary of the twenty-million-dollar estate was not Marcello Moretti.
The name on the trust was Elena Vance.
The ballroom fell into an eerie, suffocating silence.
Elena walked up the steps, her eyes wide with shock as she stared at the document. "I... I don't understand. Why is my name on your family's trust? I never knew Isabella before she came to the hospice. I grew up in an orphanage in south Chicago!"
Lorenzo slowly lowered his gun, his gaze shifting from the paper to Marcello, who was now trembling with a different kind of fear—the fear of a secret finally brought to light.
"Marcello," Lorenzo whispered, his voice dangerously low. "Explain. Now. Or I will make your death last for days."
Marcello swallowed hard, coughing up blood. "Isabella... Isabella had a daughter. Before she married your father, Lorenzo. She fell in love with a civilian. Your grandfather forced them apart, killed the father, and took the baby away to preserve the Moretti bloodline's purity. Isabella was told the baby died."
Elena felt the room spinning. She gripped the railing to keep from falling. "No... no, that's not possible."
"It is," Marcello choked out, a cruel laugh escaping his lips. "But Isabella never stopped looking. A month ago, she finally found the truth. She found you, Elena. She realized the little student nurse checking her vitals was the daughter she thought had died twenty-two years ago. She changed her will. She was going to leave the entire Moretti family fortune—the legitimate, offshore side—to you. She was going to cut me, and the syndicate, out completely."
Lorenzo stared at Elena. The waitress. The student nurse.

She wasn't a stranger crying at his mother's grave.
She was his sister.
