CHAPTER 1 — The Woman the Stallion Chose

The first person Midnight willingly followed...
...was never supposed to enter Weston Hargrove's world.
By sunset, every camera on the estate had been reviewed twelve times.
Not because anyone believed Holly Bennett had stolen something.
Because everyone believed she had hidden something.
The mansion was quieter than churches and more expensive than most museums.
Holly had only worked there twenty-three days.
Long enough to learn that no servant spoke unless spoken to.
Long enough to understand why little Mary Hargrove hadn't smiled in nearly two years.
Every room carried grief.
Weston's late wife still existed everywhere.
Her paintings.
Her books.
Her riding trophies.
Her favorite white roses blooming beneath the balcony.
Nothing had been moved.
Nothing had been forgotten.
Only the laughter had disappeared.
That evening Holly tucked seven-year-old Mary into bed.
The little girl stared at the ceiling.
"You weren't scared."
Holly looked up.
"Of what?"
"Midnight."
Children always asked honest questions.
"I was."
Mary frowned.
"You didn't look scared."
"My grandfather taught me something."
"What?"
Holly smiled sadly.
"Horses know the difference between fear...
...and panic."
Mary was silent.
Then, for the first time since Holly arrived...
the little girl asked another question.
"Will you teach me?"
Outside the bedroom...
Weston froze.
He had spent nearly three years paying psychologists, specialists, therapists, and doctors.
None of them had convinced Mary to ask for anything.
The nanny had done it in twenty-three days.
Something wasn't right.
Later that night...
Weston entered the security office.
"Show me every camera."
Hours passed.
Holly never acted suspiciously.
She never entered restricted rooms.
Never searched drawers.
Never called strangers.
Never photographed documents.
She spent nearly every spare minute...
reading old horse-training books from the mansion library.
Tristan leaned against the wall.
"So..."
"What?"
"Either she's exactly who she says she is..."
"...or she's the best undercover operative I've ever seen."
Weston didn't answer.
Instead...
he noticed something strange.
Frame 11.
Stable camera.
2:14 a.m.
Holly entered Midnight's stall.
The horse lowered his massive head before she even reached him.
Then...
she began quietly singing.
Not English.
Not Italian.
Something older.
Something almost forgotten.
The horse closed his eyes.
Weston replayed the footage five times.
"Find that song."
"We don't even know what language it is."
"I don't care."
"I want every linguist in New York listening to it by morning."
Neither man noticed...
someone else had been watching Holly from outside the estate fence.
Through a sniper scope.
Forty miles away...
A man removed his headphones.
He replayed the security recording he'd hacked only minutes earlier.
When Holly started singing...
his face lost all color.
"No..."
he whispered.
"It can't be her."
He reached for an encrypted satellite phone.
"We found the Falcon."
Silence.
Then a voice answered.
"Confirm."
"I'm looking at her."
Another pause.
"Kill anyone who discovers who she really is."
The line went dead.
For the first time in six years...
someone had finally found Holly Bennett.
May you like
And they intended to make sure Weston Hargrove never learned her real name.
