CHAPTER 4 — The Bullet She Never Saw

The shot should have killed Holly.

Instead...

Midnight moved first.

The massive Friesian exploded forward, slamming against the paddock gate with enough force to rip the hinges from the posts.

The iron gate crashed sideways.

The bullet struck solid steel instead of Holly's heart.

The sound echoed across the estate.

Every security light snapped on.

"SNIPER!"

Weston was already running before his guards reacted.

He didn't think.

He didn't calculate.

He simply sprinted toward the woman every assassin seemed desperate to erase.

Another shot cracked through the darkness.

This time Weston reached Holly first.

He threw her behind a stone pillar as shattered brick sprayed across his shoulder.

"You've been lying to me," he growled.

Holly looked directly into his eyes.

"Yes."

A third shot.

Closer.

Tristan shouted from the courtyard.

"They're inside the property!"

Black-clad gunmen poured through the eastern gardens.

Automatic gunfire lit the night.

Mary screamed upstairs.

Without hesitation Holly shoved Weston aside.

"The child!"

She raced toward the mansion.

Weston stared after her in disbelief.

Any spy would have escaped.

Any criminal would have run.

Holly ran toward danger.

Inside the mansion chaos erupted.

Servants hid beneath tables.

Glass shattered.

Smoke filled the hallway.

Mary stood frozen outside her bedroom.

One masked attacker grabbed her arm.

"Found the girl!"

Before he could move—

CRACK!

A heavy brass horse statue smashed into his skull.

Holly stood over him breathing hard.

She had no weapon.

Only instinct.

She pulled Mary close.

"Close your eyes."

"But Miss Holly—"

"Trust me."

Mary buried her face against Holly's shoulder.

The hallway erupted with gunfire again.

Seconds later Weston burst through the smoke.

Seeing Holly shielding his daughter with her own body...

something inside him shifted.

Not suspicion.

Not curiosity.

Respect.

For the first time in years...

Weston Hargrove was afraid of losing someone again.

The attackers retreated before dawn.

Three dead.

Two captured.

One escaped.

When the estate finally fell silent...

Weston found Holly sitting alone in Midnight's stable.

The stallion rested his enormous head across her shoulder.

Neither moved.

Weston spoke quietly.

"You saved my daughter."

"I promised I would."

"I never asked you to make that promise."

"You didn't have to."

He studied her face.

"I think someone has been hunting you for years."

Holly closed her eyes.

"They're not hunting me."

"They're hunting what I know."

Weston waited.

She said nothing more.

But that single sentence changed everything.

May you like

Someone wasn't trying to eliminate Holly...

Someone was trying to bury the truth forever.
