Chapter 4 - The Art of the Poisoned Cup

The morning sun over Narragansett Bay did nothing to warm the chill gripping the Whitlock estate.

Perched on the highest cliff overlooking the churning gray Atlantic, the Whitlock mansion was a monument to old money and older sins. Its sprawling stone facade looked like a fortress, guarded by private security forces carrying submachine guns and wearing tactical vests bearing the family crest—a silver anchor wrapped in a viper.

Inside the grand oak-paneled boardroom, twenty of Providence’s most powerful elite sat in heavy leather chairs around a massive mahogany table. At the head of the table sat Arthur Whitlock—a man of seventy-two with silver hair slicked back, cold blue eyes that missed nothing, and an expensive cigar burning slowly between his nicotine-stained fingers.

"The engagement is off," Arthur announced, his voice booming across the silent room. A smug, victorious smile played at the corners of his thin lips. "Daniel Carver overplayed his hand. He thought he could bring a common maid into our circles and rewrite the rules of this city. Well, my daughter Claire is safe at our family retreat in Vermont, and Carver’s empire is about to find out what happens when the Whitlocks pull our funding."

A murmur of approval rippled through the board members. Several local judges and union bosses nodded in agreement, smiling like sharks smelling blood in the water.

At the side of the room, standing quietly beside a silver serving cart, was Hannah.

She wore a fresh black maid’s uniform. Her dark brown hair had been pinned up neatly by Martin to hide the jagged, uneven chop near her left temple. Her face was pale, almost translucent, but her hands were steady as she lifted a heavy silver coffee pot.

"Pour, girl," Arthur barked without even looking at her, his attention focused on a financial report spread out across the table. "And make sure it’s hot. Some of us actually have businesses to run today."

Hannah stepped forward. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird, but her expression remained an absolute mask of docile obedience. She moved around the table, pouring dark, steaming coffee into delicate porcelain cups.

As she reached Arthur’s side, she paused.

Beneath the heavy mahogany table, she noticed a thick leather briefcase resting against the chairman's chair. The clasp was unlocked. Protruding from the top edge was a corner of a yellow legal pad—and the glowing blue screen of a military-grade satellite transmitter.

The backdoor server link, Hannah realized. That was how Arthur was communicating with the men holding Caleb at Pier 4.

Arthur looked up, irritated by her hesitation. "I said, pour, you clumsy little—"

Before he could finish the sentence, Hannah deliberately tilted the heavy silver pot.

Clatter!

A stream of boiling hot coffee spilled directly across Arthur’s pristine white shirt and pooled onto the confidential documents spread across his desk.

Arthur shrieked, leaping out of his chair with a force that knocked the heavy leather seat backward onto the floor. "You idiot! You stupid, clumsy bitch!"

The entire boardroom erupted in chaos. Board members jumped to their feet, shouting and brushing stray drops of coffee from their expensive suits. Two armed guards stationed by the mahogany doors instantly unholstered their sidearms and rushed toward Hannah, grabbing her roughly by the shoulders.

"Get her out of my sight!" Arthur bellowed, his face purple with rage as he clawed at his soaked shirt with a linen napkin. "Take her down to the security basement and lock her in the holding cell! I’ll deal with Carver’s trash myself!"

The guards dragged Hannah backward toward the service doors.

As they hauled her out of the room, Hannah didn't scream, and she didn't fight. Instead, as her fingers brushed past Arthur’s open briefcase on the floor, her hand swept down in a lightning-fast motion.

She snatched the satellite transmitter right out of the case.

Tucking the small, black rectangular device deep into the pocket of her apron, she allowed herself to be dragged out into the cold, stone-walled corridors of the Whitlock estate.
