Chapter 8 - The Sunrise Over the Bay

The first light of dawn broke across Narragansett Bay, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold, amber, and pale yellow.
Inside the master suite of the Carver estate, the heavy silence of the night was shattered by a sharp, piercing cry.
Hannah lay back against the pillows, her skin damp with sweat, her chest heaving as she breathed in deep, shaky gasps of relief. Dr. Vance, the estate physician, stood by the foot of the bed, a triumphant smile on his weathered face as he wrapped a tiny, squirming form in a warm flannel blanket.
"It’s a boy," the doctor announced, lifting the newborn up so the morning light caught his dark, tufted hair. "Strong, healthy, and loud."
Hannah let out a ragged sob of pure joy, tears streaming down her cheeks as she reached out with trembling arms.
The doctor placed the baby gently against her chest.
For a long moment, Hannah just stared down at the tiny face, tracing the soft curve of his cheek, feeling the frantic, beautiful rhythm of his tiny heart beating against her own. The nightmare of the past year—the fake debts, Aaron’s tragic death, the scissors in the ballroom, the blood on the Whitlock ledgers—all of it dissolved into the quiet warmth of the morning sun.
The door to the suite opened slowly.
Daniel stepped into the room. He looked exhausted, his hair slightly disheveled, the sharp, lethal edge of the mafia boss completely gone, replaced by an expression of raw, unshielded awe.
He walked slowly to the side of the bed, his boots making no sound on the thick Persian rug. He looked down at Hannah, and then his dark eyes dropped to the tiny bundle resting against her heart.
"Can I?" Daniel’s voice was barely a whisper, rough with emotion.
Hannah nodded, a tender smile touching her lips.
Daniel knelt beside the bed. With hands that had wielded weapons and signed death warrants for half the syndicates on the East Coast, he gently slid his arms beneath the baby, lifting his son up into the morning light.
The baby quieted instantly, blinking his dark, sharp eyes against the sun, as if recognizing the bloodline that ran through his veins.
"Welcome home," Daniel whispered, pressing a soft, fierce kiss against the newborn’s forehead.

He looked back at Hannah, his eyes shining with a depth of love and devotion that no empire could ever buy, and no enemy could ever break.
Outside, across the vast expanse of the Providence waterfront, the ships moved in rhythm with the tide, carrying a new dawn to a city that belonged, completely and forever, to the Carver family.
