Chapter 5 - The Descent to Pier 4

The holding cells beneath the old fish market on Pier 4 smelled of rotting salt, rusted iron, and old blood.

The room was damp, lit only by a single flickering fluorescent bulb hanging from a frayed electrical cord. In the center of the concrete room, tied securely to a heavy metal chair, sat Caleb Monroe.

Caleb’s face was bruised, his lower lip split, and his dark hair plastered to his forehead with sweat. He looked up as the heavy iron door screeched open, squinting against the harsh glare of the hallway light.

Two Whitlock thugs dragged a hooded figure into the room, shoving them hard onto the concrete floor.

"Another little present from the boss," one of the thugs laughed, spitting on the floor near Caleb’s boots. "Old man Whitlock says since Carver’s little maid ruined his meeting today, we should see how she likes the damp air down here before we feed her to the bay."

The thug pulled the black hood off the prisoner’s head.

Caleb gasped, his eyes flying wide. "Hannah?!"

Hannah slowly raised her head. Her face was pale, but her dark eyes were as cold and sharp as winter ice. She looked at her brother, taking in his bruises, and a dark, terrifying calm settled over her soul.

"Hi, Caleb," she whispered, her voice steady.

"Are you insane?!" Caleb thrashed against his bonds, the metal chair groaning in protest. "Why are you here? They're going to kill you! They killed Aaron, and they’re going to kill us both!"

"They tried," a deep, cold voice echoed from the shadows of the doorway.

The two thugs froze, their hands dropping toward their holsters as the heavy iron door swung fully open.

Stepping out of the darkness came Daniel Carver.

He wasn't wearing a suit today. He wore a dark tactical turtleneck, black cargo pants, and heavy combat boots. In his right hand, he held a suppressed pistol, the muzzle pointed casually toward the floor. Behind him stood Martin Hale and four heavily armed members of the Carver security detail, their weapons leveled with absolute, terrifying precision.

Before the Whitlock thugs could even draw their firearms, two suppressed pops broke the silence.

Both guards slumped forward onto the concrete, lifeless before they hit the ground.

Caleb stared in absolute disbelief as Daniel walked across the damp floor, holstered his weapon, and pulled a heavy combat knife from his belt. In two swift motions, Daniel sliced through the ropes binding Caleb to the chair, then turned and helped Hannah to her feet.

"You took your time," Hannah said, brushing a speck of dust from her apron.

Daniel looked down at her, a faint, dangerous smirk touching his lips. "Traffic on the bridge was terrible."

Caleb rubbed his raw, bleeding wrists, staring wildly between Daniel and his sister. "Hannah... what is happening? Who is this man?"

Hannah reached into her apron pocket and pulled out the small black satellite transmitter she had stolen from Arthur Whitlock’s briefcase. She handed it directly to Daniel.

"He had this," Hannah said quietly. "It's the master routing device for the Whitlock offshore accounts. And it has a live GPS signal connected to Arthur’s private phone."

Daniel took the device, a dark, victorious light gleaming in his eyes. He pressed a button on the side, and a small green LED light began to blink rapidly.

"Good girl," Daniel murmured, looking down at Hannah with a gaze that held absolute devotion. "The network is open."

"What network?" Caleb stammered, stumbling backward as Martin handed him a bottle of water. "What are you talking about, Hannah? Who is he?"

May you like

Hannah turned to her brother, placing a gentle hand on his bruised arm.

"Caleb," she said softly, her voice carrying an unshakable strength. "Meet the father of my baby. And the man who is about to burn the Whitlock empire to the ground."
