Chapter 2 - The Underground Clinic

The armored convoy tore through the rainy New York night, heading north away from the city lights. Inside the customized, medically equipped Mercedes van, Camille worked feverishly under the dim red interior lights. The tiny baby’s heart rate was fluctuating wildly between 60 and 190 beats per minute.
"He's crashing!" Camille yelled over the roar of the engine. "The withdrawal from the beta-blockers Mercer was pumping into him is causing a massive autonomic storm. I need a continuous infusion of epinephrine, now!"
Dante sat across from her, his massive hands gripping the handles of the vehicle's frame, his eyes locked on the tiny child. He looked entirely out of place—a ruthless kingpin watching over a scrap of human life that wasn't even his own, yet held the key to his bloodline.
"Save him, Camille," Dante growled, using her first name for the first time. "If he dies, the trail to Isabella's killers and my son goes cold."
Camille expertly inserted a central line into the baby's umbilical vein, her hands steady despite the van swerving violently to avoid a roadblock. "I've got the line in. Starting the drip. Come on, little guy... breathe."
A tense thirty seconds passed before the monitor beeped rhythmically, stabilizing at a safe 140 beats per minute. The baby’s pale skin began to flush with a healthy pink hue. Camille let out a breath she felt she’d been holding since the hospital.
In the front seat, Leo turned around, his face grim. "Boss, we’ve got a problem. The security footage from the hospital was partially recovered by our tech guys before the servers were wiped completely. The deletion didn't happen from inside the hospital. It was done remotely via a secure server registered to the Moretti Syndicate."
Dante’s face darkened, veins bulging against his neck. "The Morettis. Old man Donato Moretti has been trying to claim our shipping ports for three years. But he doesn't have the brains to pull off a medical switch like this."
"There's more," Camille interrupted, wiping the sweat from her brow. She pointed to the faint purple ink mark on the baby's thigh, which she had cleaned with an alcohol swab. "Look at this. It's an identification matrix used by illegal fertility and surrogate farms. I saw this once during my residency in a human trafficking case. This baby wasn't stolen from another hospital. He was manufactured for this specific switch."
Dante leaned over, his eyes narrowing as he read the code: X-772-B. "A manufactured decoy. They knew Isabella's car was going to be bombed. They had this baby ready in the wings to replace my son the exact night she went into labor in that ambulance."
The realization hit them like a physical blow. The bombing of Isabella’s car wasn’t just an assassination attempt—it was a coordinated extraction. The killers wanted the baby, not just Dante’s downfall.
"We aren't going to the safehouse," Dante ordered Leo sharply. "Change route. We're going to the old ironworks district in Brooklyn. There's an underground medical facility operated by a disgraced surgeon named Dr. Silas. He handles the black-market surgeries for the five families. If anyone knows where this identification stamp came from, it’s him."
Two hours later, the van pulled into a derelict, abandoned warehouse near the East River. Inside, beneath the rusted rafters and flickering halogen bulbs, was a state-of-the-art medical laboratory hidden behind a false concrete wall.
Dr. Silas, an elderly man with shaking hands and eyes yellowed by years of substance abuse, trembled as Dante’s men pushed him against his own operating table.
"Dante! Please! I had nothing to do with Isabella’s car! I swear to God!" Silas whimpered.
Dante didn't say a word. He stepped aside, allowing Camille to wheel in the transport incubator. "Look at the mark on the child’s thigh, Silas," Dante said, his voice deadly quiet. "Tell me who generated that code, or I’ll let Leo use his favorite interrogation tools on your arthritic fingers."
Silas scrambled to put on his glasses, looking at the purple ink matrix. His face drained of all color. "This... this is from the Genesis Project. It’s a highly exclusive, illegal genetic facility located in the catacombs beneath the abandoned St. Jude’s Asylum in Queens. It’s run by a woman known only as the Countess."
"The Countess works for the Morettis?" Dante demanded.
"No!" Silas cried out. "The Countess doesn't work for the mafia. She works for the highest bidder. But three weeks ago, I saw Dr. Mercer buying a specialized transport incubator from her. He wasn't alone, Dante. He was with your cousin, Anthony."
Camille gasped. Anthony Valenti was Dante’s second-in-command, the man who had been running the family's logistics since Isabella’s death.
"Anthony," Dante whispered, the betrayal cutting deeper than any bullet. "He was the one who altered the security details the night of the bombing. He told me he was reinforcing her protection."
Suddenly, the warehouse doors were blown open with a deafening explosion. Shrapnel and shattered glass rained down on them.
"Ambush!" Leo yelled, drawing his weapon as automatic gunfire ripped through the space.
Several masked operatives dressed in tactical gear stormed the lab, firing indiscriminately. Their primary target wasn't Dante—they were firing directly at the transport incubator containing the baby.
Camille threw her own body over the plastic pod, shielding the child with her torso as bullets chipped away at the concrete wall behind her. "Dante! They’re trying to kill the baby!"
Dante roared, unleashing a hail of gunfire from his automatic weapon, dropping two of the attackers instantly. He moved like a demon possessed, stepping between Camille and the incoming fire, his body acting as a human shield. A bullet grazed his shoulder, tearing through his suit, but he didn't even blink.
"Leo, get the van ready! We're burning this place down!" Dante shouted, throwing a grenade toward the entrance to create a smoke screen.
Amidst the gunfire, smoke, and screaming, Camille managed to wheel the incubator out the back exit, her heart hammering against her ribs. As they threw the pod back into the van and sped away into the night, Camille looked down at the child.
The baby was wide awake, his tiny, dark eyes looking up at her. And for the first time, Camille noticed a tiny, distinct birthmark shaped like a crescent moon hidden just behind his right ear.
She turned to Dante, who was staunching the blood from his shoulder wound. "Dante... look at his ear."
Dante leaned over, looking at the crescent moon mark. His breath hitched. "Isabella had that exact same mark. It’s a rare congenital nevus."
May you like
Camille’s eyes widened in shock. "But... the blood type... the footprint... it didn't match."
"Unless," Camille whispered as the pieces of the terrifying puzzle began to fall into place, "the baby wasn't switched at the hospital. The switch happened before birth. Isabella wasn't carrying your biological child, Dante. She was implanted with an embryo without her knowledge. This baby is Isabella’s son... but he isn't yours."
