Chapter 3 - The Traitor’s Price

(Word count: ~3,640)

The revelation hung in the air like toxic gas. The baby was Isabella's biological child, but not Dante’s. It meant the betrayal within the Valenti family ran deeper than a simple turf war; it was a cold, calculated strike against Dante’s legacy, orchestrated from the very beginning of his marriage.

They sought refuge in an old, heavily fortified safehouse disguised as a hunting lodge in the deep woods of the Hudson Valley. Outside, the rain had turned into a torrential downpour, washing away their tracks.

Inside, Dante sat at a heavy oak table, staring at a glass of scotch he hadn't touched. Camille was setting up a makeshift nursery in the corner of the room, keeping the baby hooked to a portable vitals monitor. Dr. Mercer was tied securely to a heavy iron chair in the center of the room, his face bruised from Leo's rough handling during the transit.

"Explain it, Mercer," Dante said, his voice lacking any warmth or humanity. "Before I start peeling your skin off piece by piece."

Dr. Mercer let out a dry, rattling laugh. "You think you're a god, Dante? You’re just a thug with a fancy name. Isabella knew. She knew the truth before she died."

Dante stood up so fast his chair flipped backward. He grabbed Mercer by the throat, lifting him slightly off the ground. "You lie! Isabella loved me! She would never betray our family!"

"She didn't betray you, you fool!" Mercer choked out, his face turning purple. "She was forced! Your cousin Anthony... he knew you were sterile from that shooting in Chicago six years ago. You kept it a secret from the commission to protect your position as boss. But Anthony found out. He knew that if you couldn't produce an heir, the Valenti seat on the Commission would pass to him upon your death."

Camille stopped what she was doing, listening intently.

Mercer continued, coughing as Dante loosened his grip just enough to let him speak. "Anthony couldn't let you adopt, and he couldn't let you discover your infertility. So, during a routine medical procedure Isabella had under sedation last year, Anthony paid me to implant her with a genetically modified embryo—a child created from Anthony’s own DNA and an elite donor, designed to look just enough like a Valenti to pass inspection. The plan was for Anthony’s biological son to inherit the entire Valenti empire."

"Then why the bomb?" Camille asked, stepping forward, her voice trembling with anger. "Why kill Isabella if the plan was to use her baby?"

"Because Isabella found out!" Mercer yelled, spitting blood onto the floor. "Three weeks before her due date, she found the secret medical records I kept on my private server. She realized the baby she was carrying wasn't Dante’s. She was going to tell him everything. She was going to ruin Anthony. So Anthony panicked. He ordered the car bomb to eliminate Isabella before she could talk."

"But the baby survived," Dante whispered, the horror of the realization crushing him.

"Yes! The baby survived the blast in the ambulance," Mercer sneered. "Anthony couldn't just let his own biological son die, but he also couldn't risk you running a DNA test if you suspected something after the bomb. So we staged the switch. We told you the baby was dying of a genetic disease so you would accept his death. Meanwhile, the real child—Anthony’s boy, the one Isabella gave birth to—was taken by Anthony to be raised in secret as his heir, while we put a dying, deformed surrogate clone in the incubator to take the fall!"

Camille felt sick to her stomach. "So the baby here... the one with the crescent moon mark... this is the child Isabella gave birth to? The one Anthony took?"

"No!" Mercer laughed hysterically. "You've got it backward, Nurse! The baby in that transport pod right now is the clone, the decoy! Anthony took the real biological child three weeks ago! The crescent moon mark? A genetic engineering fluke! The real boy is with Anthony at the Moretti estate right now, being prepared to be introduced as Anthony's 'miraculously saved' secret child once Dante is eliminated!"

Dante stood motionless, a man hollowed out by the ultimate betrayal. His wife was murdered, his cousin was a monster, and the child he thought was his was a pawn in a twisted genetic game.

Suddenly, the windows of the lodge shattered.

"Get down!" Leo screamed as a flashbang grenade rolled across the hardwood floor.

The room exploded in blinding white light and a deafening roar. Camille threw herself over the incubator once again, her ears ringing, her vision blurred. Through the smoke, she saw masked men storming the lodge.

Dante didn't hesitate. Despite the emotional devastation, his survival instincts kicked in. He drew two weapons, firing with lethal precision through the smoke, clearing a path toward Camille.

"Leo! Hold the line!" Dante roared.

But as Camille looked toward the center of the room, she saw a shadow move through the smoke. It was Anthony Valenti himself. He didn't look like the loyal cousin Dante had raised; his face was twisted in malicious triumph.

Anthony stepped up to the tied-up Dr. Mercer and shot him directly through the forehead, silencing the doctor permanently. Then, he turned his gun toward Camille and the baby.

"Goodbye, cousin," Anthony shouted over the gunfire, aiming at Dante.

Before Anthony could pull the trigger, Leo threw his body in front of Dante, taking two bullets to the chest. Leo fell, coughing blood, as Dante screamed in rage, firing wildly at Anthony, forcing his treacherous cousin to retreat out into the rainy darkness.

"We have to go! Now!" Camille yelled, pulling the incubator toward the back exit.

They escaped into the woods just as the lodge burst into flames, the fire lighting up the stormy night sky. They were alone now—Dante, Camille, and a baby whose true identity was a weapon meant to destroy them all.
